What does it mean to have no desktop? No icons? No background image?

    I have tested this switch.

Means: Shows desktop without icons. Right mouse click on desktop shows no context menu ("screen resolution", "personalization", etc.).

With F5 key: Icons appears on desktop. But right mouse click on desktop still shows no context menu ("screen resolution", "personalization", etc.).

OK, thanks for your reaction. Never mind, I will do some more testing myself. I just thought maybe somebody knew a bit more about the F5 thing (in XP or Windows 7, the icons never come back with "NoDesktop"=1, so you can F5 all you want). But come to think of it, I can't recall if the F5 thing existed *before* I installed ClassicShell. I'll check that...

So maybe I'm the only one with no desktop at all . I just never use icons. Most of my programs/tools are started by keyboard shortcuts (Autohotkey), the rest is started with a simple menu. Also never use a background image, because my screen is always filled with program windows (duh...)

Once again: THANKS for the new ClassicShell version! Getting rid of the Metro screen makes W8 look a whole lot more professional.

OK, I did a clean setup of Windows 8 (with all my settings etc, including "NoDesktop=1").
When I press F5 on my empty desktop, the icons reappear. So it's a Windows 8 thing (not ClassicShell related). I'm very sorry for bringing it up then!! I didn't notice it before... (As I said, it doesn't happen in XP or W7).

When I restart the "Explorer.exe" process (eg. using the taskmanager), the icons are gone again. Well, it's actually just one icon (Recycle Bin), I will look for a different approach to get rid of that one

When I boot with "Classic Shell" and the option "Skip Metro screen" I see for 1 or 2 seconds the Metro start menu.

Is it possible to skip the Metro start menu completely ?

    Two things struck me:
    • On a very, very slow PC ("Windows 8 to Go" on a slow USB stick) I see at first the "Desktop" - and only after a very short time the "Metro start menu". So I think "Desktop" appears at first and after this "Metro start menu" starts as a later process. But on a "normal" fast PC you don't see the "Desktop".
    • When I boot Windows 8 into "Safe mode" only the "Desktop" appears - and no "Metro start menu" (but with Windows key I can switch to "Metro start menu"). So I think in "Safe mode" the boot process of Windows 8 ends with "Desktop" - and "Metro start menu" isn't loading.

So perhaps it is possible to explore with a boot tracer why and how the boot process in "Safe mode" ends with "Desktop" and in normal boot mode with "Metro start menu" ? Perhaps it is a group policy restriction ?

I have built a pe 4 from rp.

    It goes straight to desktop.

I haven't got it right yet - couple of other issues, but it should be possible.

I probabaly won't be looking at pe 4 again until rtm.

Hey guys, I have a rather st**id problem. I installed Windows 8.1 on my new lap top a few days ago (Thanks Superfly and popeye). Then I wanted to make it look and function more like Windows 7, so I installed Classic Shell and got my Start button to look and function as it does on Windows 7...
Classic Shell in Software and Apps
Hi With the imminent arrival of windows 8.1.1 update (April 7 2014) a question has crossed my mind, I have used classic shell so as to help me over the no start menu, my simple question is should I uninstall this now in ANTICIPATION of a new start menu from Microsoft or is this wishful thinking ...
I never like upgrades, so am planning on a format (Samsung SSD) and a clean install of Win 8.1 from the image I downloaded. However I have one (biggish to me) concern, I still like to use a program called (Ex7forW8exe) this gives me the Windows 7 lookalike/classic shell, Start button and Start...
Solved Classic shell in Software and Apps

Classic Shell in Customization
I'm using Classic shell (Welcome to Classic Shell) I can't see me ever using the Metro Start screen.
We have released a skin for Classic Shell. It looks good in Windows 8, much better than default skins. The skins shipping as part of Classic Shell do not match the look of the Windows 7 Start Menu or the style of Windows 8. Many settings also need to be heavily tweaked to get a more closer...
