I really like dual boot. All my data files are in the Win 7 partition (even my many Thunderbird email folders) so I can work in either Win 7 or Win 8. That way even if Win 8 started causing me some unlivable problems I could just go back to Win 7 and keep on working. I had no problem installing my Microsoft Office programs on the Win 8 partition so I looks like the authorization system determines it is the same computer.

Is that true or am I living on borrowed time?

Would Microsoft Publisher licensing follow the same rules as Microsoft Office?

Some version of office are available in 1 or 2 computers but a single. The price is not the same for the 1 or 2 pc , as in the exemple down the single PC is $ 249 and the 2 pc is $ 349

I understand what the products say e.g. 1PC/1user, 2PCs/1user. The question is.... Is a dual boot 1 or 2 PCs? It appears to be acting like 1 PC.

dual boot is 2 OS so it considerate like 2 PCs, you need 2 licenses or a license good for 2 PCs, samme with VM.

Publisher has the same terms as Office.

The terms for each of the versions that you may have are below. There are different conditions relating to volume licensing:

Retail

1. OVERVIEW. The software is licensed on a per copy per device basis. A
hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate device.
2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.
a. One Copy per Device. You may install one copy of the software on one
device. That device is the “licensed device.”
b. Licensed Device. You may only use one copy of the software on the
licensed device at a time.
c. Portable Device. You may install another copy of the software on a
portable device for use by the single primary user of the licensed device.
d. Separation of Components. The components of the software are licensed
as a single unit. You may not separate the components and install them on
different devices.
e. Alternative Versions. The software may include more than one version,
such as 32-bit and 64-bit. You may install and use only one version at a
time.

ACADEMIC SOFTWARE. You must be a “Qualified Educational User” to use
software marked as “Academic” edition. If you do not know whether you are
a Qualified Educational User, visit Microsoft in Education: Academic discounts, education resources, and IT solutions or
contact the Microsoft affiliate serving your country.

HOME AND STUDENT SOFTWARE. For software marked “Home and Student”
edition, you may install one copy of the software on up to three licensed
devices in your household for use by people for whom that is their
primary residence. The software may not be used for commercial, non-
profit, or revenue-generating activities.

OEM
1. OVERVIEW. The software is licensed on a per copy per device basis. A
hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate device.
2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.
a. One Copy per Device. The software license is permanently assigned to
the device with which the software is distributed. That device is the
“licensed device.”
b. Licensed Device. You may only use one copy of the software on the
licensed device at a time.
c. Separation of Components. The components of the software are licensed
as a single unit. You may not separate the components and install them on
different devices.
d. Alternative Versions. The software may include more than one version,
such as 32-bit and 64-bit. You may use only one version at one time. If
the manufacturer or installer provides you with more than one language
version, you may use only one language version at one time.

PRODUCT KEY CARD TERMS
One Copy per Device. The software license is permanently assigned to
the device on which the software is initially activated. That device is
the “licensed device.”
b. Licensed Device. You may only use one copy of the software on the
licensed device at a time.
c. Separation of Components. The components of the software are licensed
as a single unit. You may not separate the components and install them on
different devices.
d. Alternative Versions. The software may include more than one version,
such as 32-bit and 64-bit. You may use only one version at one time.

BACKUP COPY.
You may order or download a backup copy of the software
from Microsoft Office 2010 Backup - Office.com. You may not distribute the backup
copy of the software. You may use it only to reinstall the software on
the license device.

As far as borrowed time is concerned, Office will "phone home" on occasion to validate itself, so it may possibly fall foul of that.

I understand the rules. I don't understand the operation. Why can I install on both of the dual boot systems without complaint from the program? In the past they it didn't seem like they enforced the rules in many cases. As an example many companies installed one software package on many computers. They went after some of those who were found. Is it still true they want you to follow the rules but really don't have a way to check or prevent misuse? We're talking about Microsoft as I have some other programs e.g. Norton and Roboform that clearly won't validate a program on more than the licensed computers.

Which type of office version do you have?

Windows 8 CP is not exactly "Genuine" - It may not "phone home" for licensing purposes - 8 certainly does not work properly with MGADIAG.exe yet.

It would help MS get user statistics from users with Office installed on 8 - and wouldn't expect a user to buy a new license just to help them with their Beta testing.

MS Office Home & Student for 1PC. You make a good point. Its to Microsoft's advantage to let folks do whatever on the beta release.

If there is a paper license in the pack that is supposed to supercede the online MSLT, but perhaps the software was not aware of that.
