    Skype strains HDD

    Hello,

I installed Skype on a fresh Windows 8 and it strains my HDD every time it's on; the drive just keeps making "loading noises" at a very regular short interval. I tried shutting just the Skype updater and leaving Skype on, but that didn't fix it.

Any ideas about the reason? I didn't really install Win 8 updates nor do I intend to update to 8.1, as I'm formatting the thing soon anyway, and switching back to my successfully claimed (hopefully) SSD.

How much disk space does it need? If it can run on a GB or 2 perhaps you can run it from a ram disk to eliminate the noise. There are many good free ones out there. Just as a stopgap until you get the SSD going.

Edit: Looks like someone has done it:

Thanks. Unfortunatley, this didn't work - the HDD is still making the same noise, which suggests it's loading something off the system partition.

Perhaps the drive is on the way out. Did you run diagnostic? You can usually download diagnostic software from the maker of the drive for free.

Yeah, I did, with HD Tune. It indicated no problems (at least no disk errors, but write/load speed were and are ok).

All the old versions were pulled out form the server. Pity.
