Win 8 partition disappears, shows up as Free Space in Win 7.

Not sure if this is the right subforum, but...

I have a laptop, so I shut the lid and put it to sleep after watching a movie. It was plugged in, and I left it for the night while I slept (to charge it).

Next morning, I unplug it and bring it to school. I open the lid and I get a "Preparing system repair" message. After a couple of seconds, It "Diagnoses" my computer and then "Attempts repairs." It fails, and so I go into Advanced Options. Try to exit to Consumer Preview, no go--just repeats the "repairs." It tells me an error happens when I try to refresh or reset, and System Restore gives me an error. I exit to another Operating System and choose Windows 7. My Win 8 drive doesn't show up in Explorer, and looking at it in Disk Management it shows up as Free Space. Is there any way to recover the files or somehow make it work? I've looked online and tried a couple of things (chkdsk complains of a write-protected drive, doesn't show up in any recovery manager) and really need this to work.

    Thanks ahead of time.

Easiest would be to use your last image.

I don't have an image to restore from. (Unless Windows makes them automatically)

That's too bad. Windows makes automatic restore points. But if your partition is wiped, those don't help. Iguess you are ready for a reinstall. Next time make frequent images. Use free Macrium or free Paragon which are the most reliable. Then you can get yourself back in business in 20 minutes.
