with linux mint i was using shotwell for pics. it would automatically date a folder and put pics in to them. tried it with 8 and does not have that function. is there other software similar

The BEST IMO BAR NONE photo software out there (FREE) is THE GIMP which works both on Linux (any distro) and Windows, I personally use Photoshop but realize that's probably vastly overkill for most and it's NOT cheap either.

Learn THE GIMP - there's actually not a lot that Photoshop can do that the GIMP can't manage in some way or another.

I'm still amazed at how GOOD some open source and FREE software really can be. (@Ms take note !!!).
