SOLVED: Found there was a setting within SMPlayer under Preferences-Interface-Instances that had ``Use only one running instance`` checked by default. Once unchecked, it now opens multiple instances. Strange, I`ve never had to deal with this option before through numerous installs. Thanks to all who`ve looked and responded. Hope this helps anyone else struggling with anything like this.
FYI, VLC Player has a similar setting (which I found on a different Google search and had me looking in SMPlayer for a similar option). (end edit)

Hi All, new member and Windows 8.1 user, so pls forgive any of my ignorance ;-)

Recently bought Acer laptop E1-510-2495 for specialized media playing use. O/S is W8.1 ver 6.3 (build 9600) 64-bit. Not on network and wireless is disabled.

I prefer to use (and have installed) SMPlayer ver 8.3 32-bit as I have a library if Playlists that I would prefer not to re-create, as well as familiarity with keybd controls.

Typically, I need to have 4-5 SMPlayer windows open, each with a different Playlist loaded.

I've been looking for solutions on the Internet, and have tried the Regedit solution of adding the following:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\Launcher

Added DWord 32-bit value and set "DesktopAppsAlwaysLaunchNewInstance" to 1
Rebooted

This did not help, nor does opening SMPlayer and right-mousing on the Taskbar icon, and using Shift while clicking on SMPlayer on the list.

Does anyone here know anything else I can try? or is it not doable with video apps in W8.1?

TIA for any advice.

Having multiple instances of an application open creates problems for the application developer. In many cases the developer has chosen not to deal with these issues and has taken steps to prevent multiple instances. Attempting to evade these restrictions will have unpredictable results.

If you are unable to open multiple instances check the application configuration for an option to permit this. If none is present then it is most likely not supported.

Note this is only general information. I have no specific knowledge relating to SMPlayer.

Thank you LMiller7 for responding.

I should note that SMPlayer is a legacy media player and this version runs automatically as multiple instances in XP Home-32 and Vista-32/HP that I have used. I have not used Win 7, so cannot say how it runs.

Thanks again for any advice.

Just a shot in the dark, have you tried running it in Compatibility mode?
