WMP issues

I've seen several posts on here about WMP not playing a variety of types of files, though many of the posts I've seen are a few years old. I don't know whether the solutions in them/downloads suggested are still applicable. I can play video files -- but I only get audio, no video. I've seen several posts that direct to a CNET download called Media Player Codec Pack. It's highly rated by both CNET and users, but when I tried to download it, my antivirus blocked it as a trojan. I've seen many posts for this K-lite program, but I've also seen a lot of posts that say it has caused issues. I'm not overly techy and don't want to get into registry and what not. My machine is brand new, though, and I'm leery of downloading something that could potentially harm it. Does anyone have a recommendation as to how I can solve this issue? Is there another, safe player that folks recommend? Anytime I encountered a problem with WMP in W7, it automatically figured out what it was and downloaded the appropriate file/codec. Apparently, that's not the case in W8.1. Can anyone help? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanx,
Jamie

I would be against any Codec Packs, i feel most of them will mess up your system, i used them back with Windows 7 and it did.
I to find there are video files that WMP just can not play. Do yourself a favor do not use them if you do make a system restore point or backup image.

I know somewhere in Media Players settings there is a setting to make sure it is keeping up to date, chances you have is set that way if it was setup to recommended settings when you first used it.

Matters if you want a free program to play these files or a paid one. Most will use this free one VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework! There are other free programs,Google it.

For me i find Cyberlink's PowerDVD is a very good paid version software that will pretty much play anything, even audio files WMP will not, example,FLAC.

It's strange, because WMP has never had a problem playing .tivo extensions before. My new computer is running WMP V12 and it just won't do it. Like you, I'm leery of the codec situation. The two sets that were recommended by CNET were flagged as trojans by my antivirus -- I just tried a second one. VLC will recognize the .tivo extensions, but it won't play them at ALL. I don't know if there's an extension or plug-in that needs to be added or what, but I can't find anything on their site. I'm so frustrated. I knew I loved Windows 7 and all of its components, but I didn't realize just how much I would miss it when I got a W8 computer.

I am not sure if you are using this, but did you try there site TiVo Desktop/Desktop Plus for PC: Troubleshooting - TiVo

Looks like a problem with something Windows 8 does not have or use, either files have to be converted to another type to use them.

I would check there site if you are using this software TIVO Desktop

I did, yes. I've even been on the phone with Tivo. The techs there aren't sure why there's a problem, either. Oh well. I did some research this afternoon and found another player, GOM, that apparently works with the .tivo extensions. I downloaded it and sure enough, I'm able to play my files. Strange that the older WMP versions can do it, but the new ones can't. Thanx for your help, though!

Your Welcome, as said plenty of media players out there, google them, see what others say how they are.
Not too familar with that one, but so many these days, glad you resolved your issue.
