Hello,
As a long time CCleaner user I have stopped it in W8. The reasoning behind this is I was getting undetermined sfc file corruptions. I reinstalled several times, same problem. Since I have been using the C: drive properties menus > disk cleaner, maybe by luck, I have installed many of my regular programs and run for two days, doing multiple sfc checks, and always come up okay. I thought that CCleaner might be removing something this preview OS needs. I pretty much had it clean everything except firefox passwords and free space wipe. Was this just a fluke or am I having it remove to much. I would really love to run CCleaner again. Appreciate all responses, opinions, and answers!

Heh I run Ccleaner a lot. Probably more times in a day than the average user that doesn't use forums runs it in a month. It hasn't ever caused this type of issue, doesn't now and if they make it 20 years from now, it still won't.

It is stellar and could not be improved alone in this aspect. It is blameless in all cases. The maker's testing methodology must be top notch.

Your file corruptions are because you installed the patch to remove the watermark on the desktop. You know you did haha.

LOL, Gman,
I am heartened to hear that one such as yourself feels confident, if not righteous in the use of the truly remarkable IMHO program CCleaner. What watermark?? In any case, your's is a +1 on the go ahead and reinstall it list!! Thanks for your experienced response!

You're welcome.

Ehhh I thought there was a chance you might say you didn't do the watermark tweak but like Google, I was feeling lucky for the moment.

Bottom right near the clock. It says Windows 8 stuff by default. There are methods to remove it.

Glen, I'm surprised to hear about your problem. I have used CCleaner frequently on XP, 7, and now 8, and it works fine. By chance, is your 8 Preview on a virtual machine or a partition?

Howdy Vince53,
Thanks for stopping in!! No the install is on a single machine. I have no proof whatsoever that CCleaner is or was a problem. But as far as I could see it was the the most intrusive program comparitively. I've used it so much that I decided to put it back in. Haven't gotten the nerve to check all the items to delete like the history and logs, just don't know enough about the workings of 8 versus 7. Never had a problem on XP or on 7. Most likely a bad coincedence. But until I get a backup system image I really don't want to take any chances. Like I said I have blindly messed around with it and it has been reinstalled at least four times. But my sfc is still saying everything is fine!!

Hi,

Whatever it is (and know what it is, I think), it's not CCleaner causing the SFC oddities.

Cheers, ;)

Being out of the loop for a fairly long time, I am still suspect, not quite 100% sure. But hey, this is just for fun anyway!

LOL Gman, most and by a probably high probability yes. But running it now and no problem, no problems in W7, running for years. No problems in XP. Like I said I may live to regret it, but not yet!
Thanks Gman the man!

lol you have threads about sfc, threads about shutdown hangs amongst a few other things. Seems there really are problems but if you like Norton/Symantec so much that you can live with those issues...then more power to ya.

Haven't had the sfc problems any more. The idiosyncracies are like the shutdown haven't occurred since I stopped trying to get W8 to burn a WinPE rescue disk, which required WAIK download and install as well as IIRC .NET framework 2. Another thing I like about W8 is that running the maintenance and the SFC and rebooting, stopped that problem. These strange things are easy to point to Norton as the cause and I can not refute your claims about the weirdness it can cause. But I am happy with it on Window 7 and unless it really bites me, I will probably keep it on W8. Having paid for it.
Do really think the oddities of defrag are caused by NIS with enough knowledgeable certainty to automatically remove it? Or is this just your first suspect? When I get the time to learn Windows Defender and Windows Firewall, I may give them a try. You seem so sincerely adamant about it. Again W8 is for playing.
If you don't mind, while on the subject it seems that Windows Defender is now considered better than the latest MSE, is this correct?

Hi,

When you download and install W8 straight from MS's download site NIS is on the list of incompatible sw IIRC.
There are other possibilities such as earlier version of Diskeeper.
The list is long but I encountered the same problem as you did and yes, if you insist and are patient enough chances are W8 will fix it.

Cheers, ;)

Howdy fdegrove,
That is news to me and thanks. I am used to the Norton AV portion of NIS. Never used whatever else NIS provides. But this is on a play computer for know and maybe I will change to the built in stuff just as a learning experience. There are a lot of people that strongly disagree, in W7 and W8 about my choice of Norton. We'll see what we shall see. Take care
