Hi there
If you are looking for a good alternative to MS office I suggest you try KINGSOFT (or WPS now) Office -- even the EXCEL seems to be reasonably compatible with Ms OFFICE. I haven't tried comparison with EXCEL 2013 but it doesn't have problems with some of my quite complex OFFICE 2007 spreadsheets and the OFFICE 2010 stuff I've tested works fine too.

Home - Kingsoft WPS Office Community

There's even Linux versions (.deb, .rpm, .tgz) so you can install using the package manager of your choice. It's in ALPHA on Linux but for ALPHA software it seems pretty good.

Screenshot of a complex spreadsheet created with EXCEL but running in WPS office on an OPENSUSE 13.1 Linux system.

NOTE : The Linux version(yet) doesn't support VBS but the Windows one seems to run VB macros (or at least some simple ones - haven't tested it exhaustively though).

Cheers
jimbo

99% of my use of MS Office is Publisher, love that program, been using it since version 1. In the beginning they sold it separately, still can't find better suited program for DTP. Printed whole bunch of stuff with it, brochures, catalogs, price sheets even few books. Had full Office 2013 bought and pushed on me by a customer I was doing some work for but now without that I'm keeping this one as long as possible just because it's there and Publisher of course.
Edit.
Just downloaded for windows, how do I go about installing from newest Mint ? It's in Windows VM.

Hi there

Choose Linux version - download -- you'll probably need the .deb file for Linux Mint -- double click and it should ask you to open with ==> choose your package manager.

With the "great" ribbon menu. I just love, when I have to use portable LibreOffice at work do something in Office, if I do not want to spend like 30 min searching for a function, that takes 1 second to perform. Anyway, I tried WPS and it had problem opening xlsx documents, they looked just horrible, not that LO is much better.

@CM - If you have already downloaded the .deb package, Synaptics should automaticaly associate the package for installation... else search Software Centre - and install from there...(my preferred method.)

Rats, just found out I can't see any other disks from Linux thru VM Palyer in Win 8.1. I installed Linux in VM from standard Linux Mint 17 .Iso. Mint also displays "Install Linux" icon, not keeping changes either, in other words behaves like a Live Linux only.

Are you saying Mint won't install permanently on your drive in VM Player, only run from ISO? I used the ISO to install, just clicked the button. Sorry if stupid question.

PS: Have to select Ubuntu as the system during setup.

Well I don't think I paid too much attention to it till now. I installed VMware VM player in windows, it asked me for Lunux ISO it did what I thought was install and it worked. Didn't have any reason to do anything special from it as I have same Mint on a USB in persistent mode and used it from there.
Hmm ... installed XP in the same VM and behaves same, no connection to other HDDs.

Yea, took a different step when I installed it. VM started up and looked like it installed Mint but didn't really. Had to always use ISO. So, I just clicked the install icon on the Mint desktop and it installed to the hard drive. Confused me at first......not hard to do.

I was going to do that but have no idea if it will install together with windows as dual BOOT (in may case triple because of Win7 too) or will stay just as VM .
This one of mine is a free version of VMware VM player. Wander if that makes difference.

Using free VMWare Player also. It will install inside whatever Host you are running, not dual boot. I believe Jimbo has instructions here somewhere to do dual boot.

Hi there

Vmplayer is fine - both on Linux and Windows.

BTW most Linux Live CD's allow you to create some "Persistence" space so you can add a small amount of software and make changes - otherwise the easiest is just to choose INSTALL from most of the LIVE CD's. There's enough software usually on these - saves downloading and installing the whole distro -- often several GB of stuff - probably most of which you don't want anyway.

Cheers

So do I just start installation from the Mint in VM Player and no repercussions to the rest of system ? Something like Vegas," What's in VM, stays in VM"

Correct, other than using some space for the virtual disk drive. I have default location which puts them in Documents folder. Never bothered to change it.
