From the Shortcut or from the Taskbar thumbnail when it's running, or both?

What about from the Start or Apps screens?

K, the only thing I experienced was, if you choose 'Unpin.....' while the app is running, you can't re-pin while it's still running. Closing the app and re-opening it worked for me.
And that's just on the primary monitor. Secondary monitors and taskbar options are another 'ball game' yet.

As far as I know, you can't change parameters of any file while it's in use. Pining and unpinning would be changing it's parameters, wouldn't it ?

Correct.
If you open
C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
then pin an app, then unpin it, the shortcut won't be released from that folder until you close that app.

Odd. I'm able to "Unpin this program from taskbar" and "Pin this program to taskbar" a program from the taskbar while it's running.

Odd. I'm able to "Unpin this program from taskbar" and "Pin this program to taskbar" a program from the taskbar while it's running.
Isn't that only a shortcut for that program ? Run once and forget, probably just pining and unpining the link, not program itself.

It doesn't matter. It should let you unpin/pin a running program on the taskbar at will when you right click on it's icon on the taskbar.

When it's running, the pinned icon changes from being pinned to show running status. You can tell the difference because the running apps have a highlight box around the icon. You can't right-click on it to change it's pin status.

Plus you may have the setting 'Show Windows Apps on the Taskbar' checked. Then when a Windows App is running in the background it temporarily shows up there and is removed when you exit (yes, you can run Chrome in Windows App mode). You can't right-click on those as well (since they also are in 'running' status).

BTW, this setting also conflicts with the 'When I sign in or close Windows Apps...'.

Odd is right. Today I can pin and unpin. And I am positive I couldn't yesterday. I also found out that if you set the 'never combine icons' in the options, the second instance of IE will not give you the options but Chrome, Firefox and other desktop apps will.

So we have a couple of different behaviors of different applications on different systems?

Whew!!!!!
