What do you think is the best system optimizer? [2014]

Hello, I was wondering what you guys think is the best system optimizer. Please note that if you do not use system optimizers, there is an option in the poll that says you do not use system optimizers. The poll can be found here: What do you think is the best system optimizer? [2014] | Polldaddy.com.

Feel free to discuss optimizers in this thread! :)

You should probably separate poll for free and paid versions, otherwise free will always win, since most people use them. You can find the free alternatives pretty much for everything. As for the results, I have been using optimizers for ages and even the best one can improve performance only by about 5%. No wonder, people consider them to be junk, when some of them claim, that they can increase performance up to 300-500%.

I am not surprised to see CCleaner as a winner, since is works great, but it is still safe, it does not remove everything. I personally use CCleaner along with WiseCare365 Free, it contains registry cleaner and defrag as well as HDD defrag and junk files cleaner. No issues or problems thus far. It is as safe as it could be.

P.S. By the way, thanks for the poll, I am going to try them out, you have got a nice list there.

Well the poll was closed so I didn't get to vote.
My opinion is not to use any optimizers. You should be creating Images of your system as you go along, and if your running in to problems just restore a Image from before the issue.

Good news, the poll is now re-opened!
6/23/2014
1. After lots of changes to separate free products from paid, the poll is finally re-opened! There is now a best free and best paid system optimizer. There is a down-side though, the poll results had to be reset since a person may have voted for say Advanced SystemCare and meant to vote for the free version but the results show a vote for the paid. I apologize for inconveniences. Please message me (recommended) or post here if you have any questions. Please re-submit your votes.

As I have mentioned before, I did a quick test of free versions and I would recommend:

1. CCleaner - is it a swiss knife for computers, it should be preinstalled on every computer, a problem solver.
2. WiseCare365 Free - obviously, that is why I use it and you do not need to buy Pro version, Free has it all.
3. Glary Utilities - GUI looks old, but it has some great tools: boot defrag and task scheduler startup manager.

My opinion is not to use any optimizers. You should be creating Images of your system as you go along, and if your running in to problems just restore a Image from before the issue.

That depends, what you consider as a system optimizer. Those "optimizers" includes various tools like HDD defrag, a deeper uninstall manager. Microsoft does not have a patent for creating the best apps, just look at IE, WMP, so why use the default tools? It is OK, if you satisfied, if something just works, but if you want something more, there are better alternatives. Creating an image or reinstal do not solve problems, they avoid them by going back, but problems tend to keep appearing again, if you keep using computer the same way.

If those "Optimizers" can send me a new processor that is 300 % faster along with double the memory, new MB , GPU etc. I would believe them only partially because even with my system that's pretty dated there is still no other PC that can be 3 times faster than it. That's hardware we are talking about, how's any kind of SW can do that ? So much "snake oil" they promise that I don't really know how can somebody be so gullible to believe it. How dirty and misused can a system be (probably to a point to usability) for any of software to help it be faster. I can understand using a program for cleaning some junk (not all) for some people not too proficient with OS or do not want to bather to do it with tools provided in the OS itself, but to fall for such scams which can ruin the system (and they do that a lot) is unforgivable. After often repairing systems ruined by some of those "miracle" programs I am very sure in it.

To me such things as junk file cleaners, registry cleaners, and disk defragmenters are not system optimizers but maintenance tools. Whether some of these things should be done is another matter. I will not speak of the evils of registry cleaners at this time. In this category there are tools better than those supplied by Microsoft. Microsoft has decided to focus on the OS itself (where third parties have little scope) rather than than the applications that run under it. I think it a wise choice.

An optimizer would be some utility that improves the performance of a healthy system. That would be something that improves memory management, disk performance, or in some way improves the way CPU resources are used. Memory optimizers do not work and are in fact worse than useless. Much of the rest may improve some aspect of performance but cost you elsewhere. In many cases it is one step forward, two steps back. There are a very few that might be worthwhile, and I remain skeptical. I will mention none. Don't ask.

I don't use any optimizers and have voted appropriately.

Voted for Ccleaner Free and TuneUp Pro. Both are great products and have excellent/helpful utilities. I use Ccleaner on an every day basis with my clients and I use TuneUp fairly often as well.

Edit: I guess LMiller7
wording is also correct in saying these are used more so for maintenance than for anything else.

Some lucid responses here.
Installing too many 3rd party programs of this nature often leads to half your system problems.
In my honest opinion, Windows has sufficient cleaning, optimization and performance options built in, and, if those won't help a sluggish system, (and I'm not trying to be a smart*ss), but here is the best optimization tool:

Well for a few years I did use Diskeeper, Then during my time with Windows 7 I found the built in defragger was actually Diskeeper lite and actual kept my disk defragged. As far as Registry cleaners I've had bad luck with them years ago, I suppose that now days they may be a lot better. I just think since I keep all my data on separate disk from my OS its just as easy to restore an image of C:\ than to attempt fix a bungled Registry or defective drivers that refuse to uninstall.
If an application is causing problems I find another application to accomplish the same thing you can trick me twice but the third time is on me.

lMiler, Edvin, you are both right. Most of those programs listed are at best maintenance helpers. Of all of them I would give Ccleaner free somewhat passing grade if used carefully and not with default settings. In win XP and before it helped with some tasks because those windows used to dirty system a lot. Fragmentation was pretty rampant and with smaller HDDs that could be a problem. Registry worked different way too. In Win 7, those problems were largely alleviated and with Win8 almost non existent. Tons of software goes thru my HDDs and never seen fragmentation hit over 1% which I ignore of course. Since Win7 I haven't seen any improvement after cleaning registry while in XP cleaning and even defragmenting registry showed some improvement. Right now the best thing for system cleanliness is to use a good uninstaller that would clean up "tails" most programs leave by mistake, sloppiness or even by design. Even registry cleaners can not clean registry as good because after a program is uninstalled regular way, tails in registry can hardly be recognized what program they used to belong to and can clean up only glaringly wrong entries. Cleaning some other things like browser history and cache can slow down loading those sites again and cleaning cookies would lead to having to enter password every time you go to sites that requires log in. Those are just some things why I don't like programs like that and not the least concern they may (and it happens) that some shared .dll or other stuff can be misidentified and removed leaving program it shared or belong to in non functioning state.

Nothing here that I heard of proves optimizers like this are needed but that Windows are perfect, that they certainly are not. nobody claimed that either.
There are a lot of benchmark programs out there, did anybody try to benchmark their computer before and after so called speedthemuppers ? Well, maybe my system was not dirty enough but when I did that, results were on the level of statistical error.

Optimizers are not really about speeding up computer, more like a complex maintenance.
I used to have various problems and just by running CCleaner, the problems were gone.

Half of advises on this forums advice users to do, what optimizers do by default to prevent problems, like cleaning metro cache or thumbnail cache, flushing DNS cache, doing some registry tweaks, cleaning registry in order to be able to install lets say a different AV and so on. They just make it easier, simpler with a nice GUI.

Hi there

The best system organiser is actually YOU (a Human!!!)

I don't like any of these sort of programs such as registry cleaners, tuneup pc or whatever -- often they come with adware or worse. If your system is running really slowly do a complete windows install again.

I keep all my extra programs that I want to install after the Windows install in a folder - Installable apps - together with the updates and serials if appropriate. Then I just go down the list and re-install -- doesn't take long at all.

You can also save the Ms updates too so you don't have to download several GB of Ms fixes too.

Regular backups also help -- if you install something that doesn't work or does something to the system just restore your previous backup. I'd always take backups before installing software for the first time.

Cheers
