RE: Win 8.1 will not complete apps install from MS store

Good afternoon.

Dad is having an issue with his HP desktop, which is running Win 8.1.

He is experiencing issues trying to download game apps from the Microsoft Store. He gets a message stating that the install can not be completed and the error code is 0x80070091.

I used Team Viewer to connect to his and attempted to do several different free games and all of them do the same thing.

I ran Malwarebytes and had some Mindspark pups which we eliminated. Did several of those scans and they have come back fine.

Checked his Windows Updates and there only 3 optional ones, Silverlight, bing bar and something else, can't remember which right now.

Ran the HP assistant to make sure that there were no HP updates that needed to be done.

Then, ran a sfc/scannow and the 1st run through came back with some corrupted stuff and, I guess, it fixed some stuff?

Ran that again earlier today and the log came back much shorter than the 1st run last night.

At this point, I don't know where to proceed from there. I have no clue how to understand corrupted files or how to fix them, so I am hoping somebody can walk me through this and help me make sense of it.

I am attaching the log for anyone who can offer their help on this.

Other than this issue, Dad said the computer seems to be running fine. He can play other games, like the Solitaire Collection and some others that he had gotten. He said there have been no other error messages/boxes pop up anywhere else using any of his other software and that it seems to connect to the internet fine and doesn't seem to be running slow or anything, other than when I was connected with Team Viewer - which I think may be normal for the response time from there in Pennsylvania to here in Texas - and I still think that moves pretty fast given it being a connection from my laptop to his.

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can lend and have a GREAT day!!!

Hello
I am going through Dad's computer this morning and have a problem...
We were trying step 17 - to clear the store cache
entered in the reset exe and it is just hanging on the screen says loading the store but just sitting there

is this a process that would take a long time or is it hanging because of an issue?

Thanks a lot!

I found this in Google.
It may or may not help:

  • Your PC doesn't meet the system requirements for the app. You won't be able to install an app if your PC doesn't meet the system requirements for it. To view the system requirements for an app, scroll to the Details section of an app's description page in the Store. If your PC meets the system requirements for an app, but you're unable to install it, check to make sure you're not signed in to the PC or the Store using a temporary or guest account.
  • Your PC was recently updated, but wasn't restarted. If updates for Windows were recently installed, you'll need to restart your PC before you can install apps from the Store.
If you've check all of the possible reasons listed and are still unable to find or install apps, you can try clearing the cache for the Windows Store on your PC.

  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then clickSearch.)
  • Enter run in the search box, and then tap or click Run.
  • Enter wsreset.exe in the Run command and then tap or click OK.

It also seems you have to be logged on with a Microsoft Account.

Well,
actually step 17 was/is related to step 1
I ran the store apps troubleshooter
it said that the store cache & license may be corrupt - to reset
I clicked next, guess it did all that
then it said that display drivers may be out of date/issues found

and hardware changes may not have been detected.

Now, dad has not made any hardware changes, everything is original what came with computer

so, next thing I did/am doing is going through his HP assistant and looking to see that all of the updates from there have been done and completed and making sure that there were no failures and all of that.

while I am working on this step today, does anyone have any tips or suggestions?

as for some of the other 26 steps listed

I did check his version of Windows 8.1 says that it is activated
obviously he is able to connect to the internet
he is signed into the computer and store with his account that is an outlook address, I guess that it is ok? He is able to go in and play his Microsoft solitaire collection games and I "think" that would be connected through the store, correct?

Step 17 is the one to clear the tore cache but when I tried to do that, that was the screen that was hanging up forever, so I had Dad do a restart just a bit ago

step 19 says to make sure he has a c:\windows\appreadiness folder, which I see that he does have

So, any other tips or suggestions?

Thanks so much and have a great Monday!

Yes, step 17 is related to step one in that the troubleshooter should fix the cache. Not all together sure though. I get the warning about my display driver, but it is an older Acer and the driver is the latest. You may want to check for the most current, though. Is Windows Update set to download"software for other products"? Is it set to download and install automatically?

What about antivirus and firewall? Knowing it to be an OEM laptop it probably has something other than Defender. It may be blocking things. If so, consider uninstalling AV and turn on Defender and Windows firewall. If you do, use the AV's uninstaller found online. Usually the native one leaves stuff behind. Defender would be more than sufficient for him. The AV gurus on here recommend it highly.

Hope that helps. I can't think of anything else.

Happy Monday to you as well. :)

Had same problem with exact same replies from the troubleshooters including display, even Re-register with the powershell command did nothing. It appears that some system files are missing and had no choice but to reinstall Windows, problem fixed. If you go this route, backup you data files first.

Oh, we are really hoping that we don't have to reinstall Windows.
I will have to check on Dad's virus stuff and see what is there.

LOL Hippsie - my other laptop is an Acer - and we're just now in the process of reinstalling things on it after having a repair place across the street do a vid card? repair/replacement.

Anyhow, Dad said they are to get storms up there later this afternoon so I might not do too much more to it for now. Don't want to be in the middle of something and their electricity go out. That would be a major oh no.

I also tried to install a free game from the store - flappy birds and got the same error message. I have gone online and researched the error code and most of them all seem to be doing some sort of combo of the steps outlines in this tutorial.

Don't know if this is more common to 8.1 than 8, but our HP laptop is not having this issue and we are running just 8, so I was really confused when Dad told me he was having problems.

Will continue onward and, of course, if anyone has other tips or suggestions, I am more than open to receiving them.

Thanks everyone!!

Don't know if it will, but I went into control panel and took screen shots of what programs Dad has installed. Maybe that will give someone a clue that will help?

I couldn't figure out how to do it in just 1 screenshot though..so I've got 3. Sorry :(

oh Hippsie, what display driver do you have on your acer?

Just wondering if you've ever encountered problems with your stuff on that one?

On my phone at the present, so I don't know specifically, but it's a generic MS driver for onboard Intel graphics.

That's a lot of programs and browser addons. Mostly HP bloatware. Did this thing come with 8.1 on it?

You mentioned Malwarebytes. Is there other AV on it?

I believe Dad's came with 8.1 already on it because when he 1s got his and I first saw it, it was different than our HP, which only had 8 on it.
And I tried to upgrade to 8.1 on ours but that was a disaster, for some reason, so we ended up reverting back to 8, another mess and I said heck no, not again. My acer came with win 7 and once I get that all back up and running, I am not going to 8 and with the HP, not going to 8.1

Not unless I have a really awesome computer guru sitting by my side the entire way, LOL. And several bottles of Excedrin triple extra strength migraine and a case of a mountain dew. Then, I might consider it. :)

Okay,
One question that I've come up with is this: I'm currently working on my Acer after reinstalling 7 on it and working thru a tutorial as to how make sure everything is nice, clean and happy.
Is there a similar list of things to work through for both my Dad's desktop and my HP laptop?
Thanks so much.

I take it your dad's problem was resolved? If so, how?

8/8.1 are pretty much maintenance free, although I run CCleaner once a week. It's a more controllable disk cleaner. It'll run Windows Update, Defender, Defrag, and CheckDisk on it's own. I check on it after Patch Tuesday to make sure it is. It hasn't skipped a beat.

So far as personalization goes, I'd go through "Change PC Settings" in the Charms Bar with him for starters. There's some forum threads here on some.
