See the screenshot below for selection you have to make for not to convert your local account to a Microsoft Account:

Windows Store - Sign in with Different Microsoft Account in Windows 8

Screenshot from tutorial Skype App - Use with Local Account in Windows 8.

You of course need an email address (Microsoft Account) but it will only be used for the app in question (Windows Store is also just an app), so in the next dialog either give an existing Microsoft Account credentials or select Sign up for a Microsoft account to create a new one to be used with Store app:

Your Windows sign in account will remain local, it will not be converted to a Microsoft Account.

Microsoft Account is any email account provided by Microsoft (Hotmail, Live, Outlook.com, MSN). In some extent also an email account from other providers like Yahoo or Gmail can be used as a Microsoft Account.

With "in some extent" I mean that if you set up a Windows 8 user profile using a Microsoft Account, you can also connect a Gmail or Yahoo account to a Microsoft Account. However, when using a local account to sign in to Windows 8 or later, you cannot use Gmail and Yahoo accounts for Store and Store apps as told in my previous post.

Microsoft Account is single ID for many MS services.

A little soft selling here by MS: Microsoft Account Benefits Overview

You can use any eMail address to establish a Microsoft Account or create a new one using Outlook.com (Hotmail migrated to Outlook.com a while back).

With the advent of Win8 and Windows Store, the concept has become more prevalent - it's a similar model to Google Play (for apps).

The fact that Microsoft is changing the name of a lot of things doesn't make understanding or explaining things any easier

That's correct, that is how you'll be signing into each app separately but you will need to sign OUT of each app separately as well if it applies, and sign OUT of the Store each time as well.
Go to PC Settings/Accounts/Your account to check your type.
