Not exactly sure what I'm looking for, but I know what I need.

I just got a Toshiba Encore tablet that has some form of GPS capability. I'm traveling to Western Europe and I'll be traveling around extensively in the cities and countrysides. I need some sort of GPS app or software that I can use offline, or at least figure out how to pre-load areas for offline use.

If someone has a better idea of what I need, I would greatly appreciate your help!

Hi there

Not sure what you mean by "Off line GPS" - since the whole point of GPS is that you ARE connected either by internet or by phone system to GPS Satellites.

You could use GOOGLE MAPS to prepare a route though and then print it off (Does anybody actually even KNOW what a Printer is any more !!!!).

Cheers

What's not to understand about offline GPS maps?

Your device just needs a GPS chip and basic map software installed. It in no way shape or form requires to be online for any reason.

With that being said, it is NICE to be online because it can pull the latest map data, get traffic updates, and can use Google to do searches.

BUT, you can download and install maps like Microsoft Street and Tips and most definitely use GPS with the maps offline.

Sometimes you might be travelling somewhere that just does not have cellular coverage or it's cost prohibited and so you can use software like Streets and Tips (Android has offline maps software as well) which works dandy!

You are NOT connected to satellites via your cellular network. You are connected to the satellites from the GPS chip itself.

I am extremely happy user of Nokia's free Here Maps for Windows (HERE Maps app for Windows in the Windows Store). It has replaced both Bing and Google Maps on all my computers as I find it better, more flexible and nicer to use.

I have a Dell Venue 8 Tablet with Win8.1. I also have a DeLorme GPS receiver for use with their Street Atlas. So far the only issue I have with the tablet is I need a USB adapter for MicroB to standard USB, have to get an OTG/On The Go adapter ordered soon to plug the GPS into. And I'm a bit leery where the port is on the up edge when using the tablet in Landscape view, weight of adapters could eventually be an issue.
