Windows 8 Media Player Upgrade?

I have a laptop that's about 1 year old that came with Windows 8.0 that had the Windows Media Player included. I keep getting a message that I have to upgrade the media player. It tells me to go to the Windows Store. Which out of many choices do I download to upgrade the Windows Media Player?
I know very little about computers so a simple direction would be appreciated.

You are going to need to open media player, right click on bar where it has "Library>Music etc. and choose "Show Menu Bar". when that shows up, go to Help and choose "Check for updates".

Thank you for your reply. I followed the above instructions and I get the message that I DO have the current version of Windows Media Player installed.
I wonder why I get the message to go to the Store and upgrade the app?

Must be some residue, I still get advice, actually telling me I'd be better of with Win 8.1 and I already had it and updates after that.

OK...I keep being sent to the Store for an update. I finally noticed in the upper right hand corner of the Store page there is a tiny notation "upgrades (18)". I click on that and it shows a block entitled "video". I click on that and I go to the install page and it just sits there saying "pending". I waited for 15 minutes and it still says "pending". So how do I get the upgrade installed?
