    Is Java necessary?

Or is Java just a vulnerability and a exploited piece of software that shouldn't be installed on Windows 8.1?

*Thank you for moving this thread to the appropriate section.

    Depends on what you do.
You need java on some websites like that cinvert music to video or download videos or stuff like that and where you select "detect my system hardware". And also if you develop java apps (which i suppose you dont).
Just install java, it wont hurt and will barely put any effect on you.

Whether or not it is necessary depends upon the type of applications you need to run. Only you can decide if the app is worth it to you.

Java is a significant security risk. I would install it only if needed.
Not many websites (relatively speaking) require Java but when they do it is critical.
I don't have Java installed anymore and don't miss it. But your situation may be different.

I use SageTV, which requires it, but other than that, I have no use for it.

Java's real security issues are when it is used in the browser. If you need it for an application but not on the web then you can turn off the browser component in the java control panel on the security tab. It will then be relatively safe.

Firefox automatically set's it to Off and you need to give it permission to let it run.

If you install Secunia it will at least let you know if there is a security update to reduce the vulnerability issue.
I use Java for the videos on my ISP homepage - well actually my wife does so I need Secunia.

Solved Java 8, 32 and 64 bit in General Support
I use both 32 and 64 bit browsers so I had Java in both versions up to v7. Now I installed Java 8, 64 bit, then tried to install the 32 bit version. The installer, however, halted for I 'already had it'. Does it mean that from v8 the 64 bit Java can also be used by the 32 bit browsers?
