For those who like to play around with Linux Ubuntu, and Kubuntu 14.4 are out in both 32 and 64 bit modes. Loading the 64 bit mode into VMWare 10 Workstation at this time. . .enjoy.

Hi there.

Thanks for the info but I went off Ubuntu once they started playing Politics and messing around with the Open Source community. (Links with Canonical Ltd).
Don't like their Unity desktop either -- (Don't confuse with running VM's in Unity mode - that's totally different).

Debian and Opensuse are my two distros for long term stability and in regular use - running W7 / W8.1 / XP VM's - while for playing around with I use Linux Mint. Posting this from a W8.1 update 1 VM running on a Linux Mint host.

Opensuse gives me KDE plus all the other desktops I want without any problems including the minimalist Openbox whilst for quick general purpose use I'm using Debian (currently Wheezy 7.4). For switching desktops Opensuse seems the most "User Friendly" as you just logon to the one you want and ALL the features are available. Some distros get their "knickers in a twist" if you say want to install BOTH Gnome and KDE to ay nothing of LXDE too.

Cheers

Yeah, i bailed on Ubuntu on the desktop when they went to "unity" as well. Never felt right to me at all. I switched to using Linux Mint where i needed a Linux desktop.

Hi there

@Pparks1

Linux Mint 16 -- have you managed to get a Guest VM on VMware workstation or VMware player running in UNITY MODE to display the application menus correctly -- all I see is a transparent area where the application menus Should be -- I've tried disabling desktop effects etc. Happens with LXDE and KDE -- haven't tried other desktop GUI's yet though. Same problem on Windows or Linux Guests. Using VMware workstation 10.0.2 / vmplayer 6.01. - was the same in version 10.0.1

Office (EXCEL 2010) displays menus correctly but a lot of other programs just give the transparent area.

Everything works fine in "Normal" i.e non unity mode.

example -- WINX Dvd ripper -- menus OK, Mp3tag menus transparent.

Cheers
jimbo

@Jimbo: To be honest, I hardly ever touch Unity mode with VMWare Workstation. And the overwhelming majority of Linux VMs that I run, don't include a GUI :)

I've got a couple of days off work, I'll grab my Windows laptop and give it a shot with Linux Mint 16 and see what I experience and post back here.

Jimbo,

My menus are NOT transparent, but when I switch to Unity, I get my Linux mint desktop in a window that I cannot close...it's exactly what is shown here.
https://communities.vmware.com/message/2304766#2304766

I'm running Mint 16, Cinnamon desktop, 32bit.

Running Server 2012R2 Unity is working perfectly, desktop goes away, application menu shows up above start menu, applications have menus.

My host computer is windows 8.1 update 1, with Intel HD4000 graphics
Running VMWare Workstation 10.0.2

I did install KDE via, sudo apt-get install kde-standard
Switched to KDE Plasma
Logged in

When i went to Unity, it got rid of the desktop. However, any and all unity apps started only function within the window in the upper left corner that was there previously and causing me problems. So, I cannot move the windows around outside of this window. But, my menus are not transparent.

Hi there
Thanks for your tests -- shows that something is not 100% working with Unity mode

My biggest problem was running a Windows 8.1 GUEST on a Linux MINT Host and an OPEN SUSE 13.1 -- the Host computer had the INTEL graphics rather than Nvidia so it could be a combination of any of those things.

Looks like it's a KDE plasma problem -- even though I tried with LXDE I also had KDE installed first. I'll try using some other desktops without KDE.

(Nice about Linux -- so easy to test different configurations without having to worry about activations etc).

Anyway thanks for taking the time to test.

Cheers

Just got done converting an old XP machine to Linux, finally settled on Xubuntu because of ram constraints. I am surprised how well the OS runs with just over 540 megs of ram!
