I am having problems with re-installing software for my printer. I am running Windows 8.1 from a SSD. To save space I installed HP's all-in-one software on my D: drive. My D:drive died. I could recover no data so I simply replaced it and started rebuilding. When attempting to re-install the HP software I get the message that the software is already installed on my D:/Program Files (x86) and will up update it with a newer version if necessary. The install program gives me no way to redirect the install. If I continue it appears to install the printer and everything but will not complete. It spins in an endless loop. I have to either reboot or use task manager to exit. The resulting install (non-install) shows nothing in D: and some HP files in C:. To try to fix I have removed all evidence of HP files in C: and all I can find in the registry. Nothing works. There is obviously some history stored somewhere of the original instillation. Where is that history stored and can it be deleted or redirected?
thanks for any suggestions.
Go to HP Drivers and Downloads for Printers, Scanners and More | HP ® Support to download the drivers for your HP printer. The only thing that is stored, is downloaded updates from Microsoft/Windows update. With that, the OS uses a Registry entry to point to the location. The WinSxS is all Windows updates and downloads from Microsoft/Windows updates.
Thanks. Sorry I wasn't clear. I have the software and drivers from HP, when I try to install it, it says I must install on my D: Drive. There must be a history contained from the original install somewhere on my c: drive or in the registry.
try programs and features in control panel, it could be still showing as being installed there ,you should be able to remove or repair if it is there I think .
It does not show in programs and features.
The model number is C7250
Does anyone know where the original install information is installed? Registry? somewhere else?
I repair computer in my home ,and if I had you computer with me now this is where I would use Ccleaner software to scan the registry to remove dead links, and it would like remove reference to the hp being on D: ,it up to you to decide if you want to use ccleaner ,as I cant be responsible if something goes wrong ,in my years of using ccleaner I have never had an issue with it. if you wish to use it I will post the link to it .just watch as it installs ,it has google toolbar and chrome as a choice to install ,just uncheck it and proceeded CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Thanks Caperjack,
Tried using CCleaner both the registry cleaner and the uninstaller, it didn't work. Finall succeeded by using Advanced Uninstaller and deleting all references to HP in the registry.
Still would like to know where Windows stores install history. Does anyone know?
