Installing applications dragging on and on in 8.1

    Windows 8.1 x64

There are some programs that when I install them appear to hang when they're most of the way through the install. A current example is Hotspot Shield.

I've unregistered and reregistered MSIexec, to no effect. I've run sfg/scannow and the system integrity is 100%. When I check the process it appears to be doing something, though so trivial as to be barely worth recording, so I have to assume it's not hung, unless it's marking time. It's certainly not waiting on a write queue.

I know others have had this problem, but I can't find a solution anywhere.

The answer might be that I needed to run the install as administrator.

I've had that happen, too. I've been reinstalling a swag of software on my new machine and most go through quickly, it's just the odd one or two that don't. Run as administrator worked for one product. I shall try that again if the problem recurs.

There's one feature I really don't understand in Windows 8. I move mouse to the top of the screen, and now I can drag desktop and push it to right/left side of my display. The rest of the screen is empty, there are no even metro apps (I expected it because it would at least make more sense than...
