How do i change default application to Unknown Application

I have accidently set my .ext default program to Notepad and I want to change it back to an unknown application I have tried deleting it in regedit and it just sets it back to notepad even when I restart my computer afterwards any help would be much appreciated

Did you restart the computer after merging the .reg file?

In that case, you could also do a system restore using a restore point dated before you changed the association to undo it. :)

I know, but it is worth the try. The problem might be deleting the whole key and Windows restoring it.
I tried to do it with rtf and it worked, but there might be some other settings involved, who knows.
