locate32 (64-bit) Version 3.1.11.7100 - video problem

I have been using 'locate32' in Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.


Many years... lots of usage...


But now in the last few months or so I have seen a certain kind of video corruption in the display.

I have been using version (64-bit) Version 3.1.11.7100 for a long time.


I think, perhaps the latest Windows update has 'corrupted' the view. I have not updated or changed the video drivers in a while.


When Locate32 starts up - all is normal, and it has been for many years.


But lately the view get corrupted in a weird way as shown in the two image views below.


After a reboot, all is well, as in view 1. But later, after some time, the view gets corrupted for some reason as in view 2 below.


I have no idea what is going on. Locate32 is no longer supported.


Any ideas? Anyone else seeing this?

Next time you get the black in the drop down list, open Task Manager and see if Desktop Window Manager is running. If not, it may be related to this post:

This morning all was fine, but a few hours later the problem re-appeared.
I have no idea what made it happen.
I looked at Task Manager and DWM was running with a small load.
No other windows seemed affected, and a program that has some drop-down menus worked fine.
I checked the event viewer and there was nothing of any interest in that time period.
I looked over the registry settings and all seemed fine.

Closing the program (exit) and starting it again fixes the problem.

Are there other versions you can try? I'm thinking it may not redraw properly, But I bet it happens even if the window is not moved or uncovered?

I used locate32 in Linux and used this Windows program for a time for that reason. But for plain vanilla NTFS partition search it's tough to beat Everything Search. It uses the MFTs. That's why it only works on NTFS. It's lightning fast.

Well, it's not that big a deal, I can simply restart the application.

Everything looks good after that, and I also use Locate to index DVDs and Fat32 drive.

Hmm, seems to be several areas where Gui programs show black inside of controls or complete windows. I have to wonder if it's related to W8 having 2 user interfaces. I don't recall seeing all this black stuff in older Windows flavors.
