Where does the 'People' app get it's 'People' from?

I have loads of contacts in People that I deleted years ago. Where is the People app getting its data from? Presumably from Windows Live, but where does it get the data from?

From your address book on windows live and from any other accounts you add eg. Facebook friends.

Thanks. Yes, I said that about Windows Live in my post, and asked where it gets it's data from. I have never consciously put any contacts on WL, and the data on there is old and fairly useless.

It imports your contacts and it doesnt matter if they're frequently used or are quite old unused ones.

msn, windows live, hotmail, etc...accounts are all connected. possibly even more (with the exception of xbox live, I assume), so if you've ever had contacts in any of those, that's probably where it's getting the info from. I have people in my "people" list that I don't remember either, but I don't doubt they are people I added from one of those services long ago.

Thanks guys. I hear what you are saying, but I don't use services like Hotmail, WL, msn for contacts. Facebook, yes, a bit, and I can see those OK in the 'People'.
All my calendar and contact details are held in Apple iCloud service, and I have no contacts in Outlook. I'm confused about where this data has come from (in People) as most of it is years old, with none of my new contacts from the last 2 or 3 years.
Even when I was using Outlook as my main contact tool (up to about 18 months ago), most of the stuff on People had been deleted even then.

Once your contacts are in the cloud they are there forever even if you delete them.

What?? Your statement is somewhat concerning to say the least! in the Cloud forever! That is certainly not the case for any Cloud service I have used. The whole concept of the Cloud is to keep files, contacts, etc. in sync between all your devices. Any deletion from any device should be reflected on the Cloud server and all connected devices.
Anyway, what Cloud are you talking about here? I haven't used any of the services mentioned above.

It's probably your old outlook contacts.

Well, as I said above, it doesn't contain any of the contacts I put on from when I was using Outlook, but does contain all the ones I had deleted, and secondly, I didn't think that Outlook Contacts were Cloud based anyway. What Cloud service does it use?
