Aerial view in Maps app are old

The Maps app that is on the start screen shows an aerial view of my neighborhood that is at least three years old. It says copyright 2014 but it is obvious the image is very old.

This is a new computer updated to Win 8.1. Does the app need updating? Pretty disappointing.

My guess is that the satellite images are needing updating. It's an expensive business. Until recently, my home was shown as bush land and a wood frame in google maps, I built my house over 5 years ago.

Nothing to do with Windows (any windows), OS or computer, those are pictures from a satellite and when lover than 2000 meters/yards taken from airplane. This must be one of the strangest "disappointments" I ever heard of.

Seriously? I know its not about the OS. I posted this in apps didn't I?

Google Maps is up to date. So is Yahoo.

I assume the Maps app uses Bing. So obviously Bing isn't up to date. And yes it is a huge disappointment that a major company thats trying to make inroads into the app market and in fact forces me to use their app shows me a three year old map.

Frankly its an epic fail and there is no excuse for why they don't have an up to date map when every other major company does.

For me Google and Yahoo maps are definitely closer to current. I can tell they are probably less than a year old.

So for me Google and Yahoo don't have a problem making sure they have up to date maps. Or at least newer than several years old like MS Maps uses. I live in a major metro area. There is no reason MS shouldn't have a more current map.

Obtaining Satellite images is an expensive business. I'm not saying its an excuse, one would assume Microsoft has its own Satellite, actually, I would be surprised if MS didn't have one Satellite per human being on this planet .. oh hang on, that's google.

Epic fail it is. but so is BING?

EDIT ^^^ Yeah Agreed ;)

i don't wanna see my house, it's messy. But the lady next door has a nice pool and cute friends. just sayin ...

Oh I don't know. My son was pretty disappointed he couldn't see his mum coming home from work in real time on Google. Depends on your expectations and 5 year olds certainly have high expectations :)

People really think its ok for the Maps app to have three or four year old images? In this day and age?

Especially when other services have up to date images?

Keep drinking the Kool Aid.

And here is bing saying " people still think its ok to have expectations for free services, when there are other apps out there to choose from"

Satellite tracking and up to date maps, wherever they are? Are two completely different things. My wife had trouble with that one.

Other services don't have fully up to date data

Google admits their maps are up to 3 years out of date

https://support.google.com/maps/answer/22040?hl=en
That seems like a standard disclaimer and the key in that is "up to". The Google maps image for my neighborhood is not three years old. Hard to pinpoint its exact date but its definitely not as old as what I see on the Maps app which has to be four or more years old when I think about it.

Another poster says when he looks at Google maps it is five years old.

I thought the images were shared between services. If one has an up to date image for an area all of the majors should.

zoom in very close on your neighbourhood and see what date it shows (need to zoom right in for accurate date)

I agree with you, it's really a let down to show old images, they should know that we are not 5 year olds and remove the App if it costs them too much.

There would be real bad traffic jam in orbit to cover whole earth with hi-res pictures in real time. Not even military cam afford to have real time coverage on all the places on earth ( they would love it I bet) NSA, CIA and the rest of them would be thrilled. This way as it is now, satellites have to spend air on jets to move them a bit to change coverage or in case of newer ones power to change position of gyros. Then there are temperature gradients and clouds in the atmosphere that hamper hi-res photography and have to make thousands of pictures of one place just to get clear view. Ad to that the fact that with higher magnification comes narrower field. After all that software has to seamlessly stitch all the pictures together and make all that available to us on internet. And all that is just to get picture down to 2000 meters, after that airplanes take over and have to make even more pictures with even more details just to look like looking down from 200 meters.
OK, now we got to that height and than come funny cars with glittering sphere on the roof that has to drive thru a lot of streets an collect few gigabytes of data for every block for "Street view".
After all that somebody gets disappointed that he can't follow his cat chasing mice.
Well maybe some day or if some little green man come earlier and give us technology for that it will be possible. Maybe even some clever lawyer will find some loop hole in the laws of physics so we can expect something that makes 1% of those 100 or so bucks we payed for windows to give us all that.

Using your link the image of my neighborhood is not the same as I see when I use the Maps app. It is more current(2011). The one on the Maps app is at least from 2010 or earlier.

Why the discrepancy? Shouldn't the Maps app be using that image?

Unless you want to pay, even Google is outdated in a lot of areas. I live in a large metropolitan area as well and the Google map is at least a couple of years old. It is free! If the map is current, consider yourself lucky. I'm happy just to have the capability and not disappointed at all.

Amen antspants.
