Just this really. And then I have to go to task manager and close it down and open it again but I can't get any work done as I can't save anything. I just installed the windows 8.1 patch two days ago. Any ideas anyone?

Hey tra,

Go into control panel's uninstall programs section, find office, and select 'change'. Click repair, restart, and let me know if that helps.

Hi DustSailor - do you know how long this should take? I opted for the quick option but it' been "working on it" for around an hour now with no indication of how long this should be taking.

Hey tra,
I wasn't aware there was a 'quick' option. I thought it just asked if you would like to repair, and you would answer 'ok'.*

Restart the computer just to be on fresh ground.

*You could try doing the office repair overnight as well.

Keep in mind a lot of this stuff is just going to have to take time. With slower computers, it is inevitable.

It may be some kind of problem with your system. Follow this tut for SFC scan: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html

Run an antivirus program, perhaps overnight for a full scan, so that your system is clean. If you know you do not have one, use something like Avast! or MSE. Malwarebytes is a great free accompanying tool for an additional scan if you'd like: Malwarebytes : Free Anti-Malware

Make sure your system only has programs that you want installed on it. For example, COUPONTHIS is not a good program to have installed; uninstall it.

Run disk optimization, good for both HDD's and SSD's: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/8615-optimize-drives-defrag-hdd-trim-ssd-windows-8-a.html - and make sure it is set to automatic.

This is a good list of how to speed some things up, some of which I already mentioned. Some things will cost money, which you obviously do not need to do (such as purchasing more RAM): http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/37511-optimize-performance-windows-8-a.html

The SFC scan will do you good, as well as an antivirus scan, but the rest is just to eventually speed things up, but not really solutions to your current problem. Let me know at least how the scans go, and we'll move on from there.
