    Start screen apps not working, including Store


    About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system. I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I have been searching for two days for ideas on line. In a few places I've seen similar problems, but no solutions. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8! Any ideas?? Thanks, Geoff.

    (Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)

    I've just tried a solution I found on the a similar thread, I run the following command from the command prompt "powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.XML" The STORE tile now works!! BUT the other metro apps still do not, and the other system functions which work in METRO do not, as I described above. So it's a step forward, but a long way to go! Any ideas??? Thanks, Geoff

    Yep, that was item number 15 in the troubleshooting steps to re-register the Store.

    You could start at the top of the list in the tutorial posted above, and work your way down testing the apps each time to see if they are working yet until they hopefully do.

    Will do, but what about the system apps? Like "Windows update settings", anything with a cogged wheel as a icon?

    If you mean for PC settings, then it applies to it as well.

    Okay, I've just tried everything on the list that I can. I haven't refreshed the pc, mainly because I can't! I've got a backup disc for Windows 8, which I made when I upgrade win 7 to win 8, but nothing for win 8.1, and the refresh tool from the recovery menu didn't accept the disc! SFC first time said there were errors, some of which it could fix. I ran DISM/online, and then SFC again, and it said that it could find errors.

    Store is now working, as I said above, but the other metro apps are not, and PC settings are not working either. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling an app. It uninstalled, but refused to reinstall. I tried to install another small random app from STORE, and it wouldn't install. Any ideas?

    Are you getting an error message? If so, what's the full message?

    Do you have a 3rd party AV or firewall program installed that may be blocking them?

    I get no error message. I click on a tile, it flips, screen goes blue and stays blue. If I click on the blue screen, (there is no message or image on the screen, it's completely blank), I get back to the start screen, but if I move the cursor to the left hand side of the screen, the app that I tried to start is shown, see the attached printscreen. When I try to use PC settings from the start menu, nothing happens when I click on them. I am using AVAST antivirus, up to date. I tried uninstalling it, but it made no difference, so I reinstalled it!
    This is really weird!
    Thanks for your suggestion so far, any other ideas?

    You might consider reinstalling Windows 8 using what you used to upgrade from Window 7, then update to 8.1 again when finished.
