Metro apps only closing with alt f4

    Hello all,

I don't know if this is intended or not, but my Metro apps will only completely close if I use alt+f4 from within the app to close it. If I pull the app down from the top with my mouse, or I go to the switcher, right click, and click close, the only thing that happens is that my Metro apps get removed from the app switcher, and from the alt+tab list. Using the task manager, I can see that they are still there, and still using the same memory that they were before I tried to close them. With alt+f4, they disappear from the task manager and I get back the memory that they were using. Additionally, when I close them with pulling down or the switcher, when I open them again from the start screen it is as if nothing had happened. They still open into whatever state they were in, and the splash screen with the app icon doesn't appear again like it would if the app had actually closed and been reopened.

This definitely seems wrong as all three options to close apps worked in Windows 8, but in Windows 8.1 only alt+f4 works. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello The Visitor,

It has changed a bit on how to close an app from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. In Windows 8.1, you will now need to wait until the app flips to show it's tile when you drag it down to close it.

Here are some more ways to close apps in Windows 8.1.

    Hope this helps,

Wow, that's incredibly annoying. So there's no way to close an app from the desktop without opening the task manager, and if I want to close the app from within it without reaching over to my keyboard, I have to wait 2 seconds to do so? Ugh, that is terrible behavior.

If I wanted to leave an app running, I'd just do nothing. Deliberately performing an action like pulling down or clicking "close" in the switcher does the same thing as doing nothing would. Seriously, with Microsoft it's like two steps forward, 1 step back. They can't just have a good product from the get-go, they have to fail one or two times first.

Well, thank you for informing me of the new behavior.

Yeah, the whole thought process behind the change was that it was thought that most users would prefer to leave their apps opened so that they would just suspend instead of close to make loading them faster the next time you opened the app the same way smartphone apps work.

They changed it to where you had to wait until the tile showed when dragging the app down to prevent the app from being mistakenly closed completely for the above reason.

But if I wanted to leave it open I would just go back to my desktop and continue working, no input needed from me. Doing nothing achieves the same purpose as doing something, which is kind of the very definition of useless. The only thing that "closing" it does is remove it from the app switcher and alt+tab. But then, if the point is to make it easier to get back into the app, that just defeats the purpose because now you have to go to the start screen to open it again instead of just simply going into the switcher from the desktop, or using alt-tab.

It seems Microsoft didn't think these things through very clearly. They should be able to make smart changes by themselves instead of releasing bad changes, then using all of the negative user feedback to fix it later. That's just a recipe for dissatisfaction.

Those were my thoughts as well, but I'm sure they must have their reasons.

Hi, whenever I open a Metro app like Weather, even after closing it using the red cross in the upper right corner (feature added in 8.1 Update), the app will keep running in the background forcing me to end it with Task Manager. Is this normal?
My 8.1 Update 1 HTPC now sends us to the desktop instead of the Start screen when we close an app. I know of the setting in taskbar properties to always go to the desktop instead of start when an app is closed. This option is unchecked. It looks like any non-touch Update 1 PC just ignores this...
