Metro(Modern?) Apps not working right after someWinUpdates

I set up my 8.1 installation, played with all the apps, got used to how M$ wants the future to be...and this morning when I turned my PC on, it said it was installing some updates. No biggie.

Now today I am having a bad time with some of the Apps. Skype for example(though this seems to be a known issue?) loads for about 4 seconds then CTS(CrashToStart). Photos will let me look around for about ten seconds, then CTS. Reading List, CTS soon as it looks loaded.

I have tried re-installing the apps, to no avail. Hopefully someone here can help, or a hotfix will be released, because a refresh would be a sucky option just for it to break again.

Tried everything short of the refresh.

Not looking forward to the wait time to copy my files back to the backup drive, to refresh, copy everything back, a windows update happens, and back to square 1!

This is getting worse for the idea of backing up data before refresh, but could suggest this is some form of network issue.

I have no proxy set. There are no known issues with my internet connection.

But now Skydrive (silently, of course. What happened to the age of helpful error messages?) is not uploading files. It of course does not say this, but changes are not reflecting on the web version, and attempts to make files online only say that the file is not uploaded.

The photos app is the only one producing entries in the event viewer.

What is the KB number of the update? I just got a notice on one and have not installed it yet.

I have just refreshed my PC, which did solve the problem. I do not have the KB number any more, and I will be avoiding updates for the foreseeable future.
