Have you tried reseting any failed prev. Windows Updates, this often works & can be done via the W8 built-in DISM Tool:DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8Hope this helps...

because nothing in Metro (including PC Settings) was working under my original user account (which is the administrative account). When I logged out of my original account into the new account (which is just a local account at this point) the Metro apps seemed to be working and I was able to get into PC settings while in the new account. This is where I have currently stopped.

What screenshots do you think would be helpful to the solution?
sooo, Metro/Start Menu screen was not working at all, including the charms bar? That is just too weird and I haven't a clue why that would happen! Maybe, no...how about? no, don't think so... Nope, my mind is a blank.

Now there are a lot of commenters about Win8 who would love to have Metro go away, but still.

    evt, welcome!

I am sure there is a tutorial on how to run a command prompt as administrator but I like showing off my Win8 shortcuts folder. Open this zip file and copy the folder somewhere. Right click on the command Prompt shortcut and run as administrator.
Thanks for the help, I was able to execute the command. Unfortunately it didn't help - the apps that crashed before still do now even though I uninstalled and re-installed them.

I guess the lesson here is don't upgrade either until you have to or until some time has passed.

I can confirm this. I had the exact same issue when I first got Windows 8 a year ago, some metro apps would just crash. I figured that this was happening after messing around with the Homegroup, I'm not too sure what it was but it was definitely related to that in my case.

Evt, Do not give up hope. This problem does not happen to everyone (lucky us!) so it is not systemic, just a quirk with our hardware, drivers, and settings. The program you ran was just to see if there are errors on the hard drive, not a likely fix.

What happens when you try installing the app, say, weather?

Comp, welcome! The two (Homegroup/hangs sleep and apps crashing) were both on my machine. I got Homegroup finally running, then I was able to successfully get the apps back up and running. Here is the Homegroup discussion:

    Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

Lots and lots of posts but see if something may help there. Homegroup may be enabled by default by Win8.1 so it might need to be set up anyways.

John, I never understood this argument really, because why would our hardware, drivers, BIOS not be good enough for Windows 8.1 while it worked flawlessly under Windows 8? (i.e., people who post here probably never had any app crash on Windows 8 on the same hardware)

Steve it is our Karma settings. Also, when was the last time you had your feng-shui checked on your computer placement? Heh.

Actually, since most folks are upgrading rather than doing cold install of Win8.1 GA, a lot of settings have been carried over. Also, there have been a LOT of internal changes to Win8.1 released version. One of these is directly responsible for the HOMEGROUP issue I had. Who reads all these warnings, especially when it did not matter in Win8/Win8.1 RTM?

I know about this change in 8.1 that you were the first to point out. However, this has nothing to do with the Metro App problem.

Also, the upgrade-route argument does not apply to me, as I did a clean install of the Windows 8.1 final version, after having repartitioned my main disk. There shouldn't have been any of the problems on a fresh "out-of-the-box" install. I have been able to sort out most if not all of these metro app issues by reinstalling them, which to me shows yet again that it's not a hardware issue, but rather a buggy installation procedure within Windows 8.1.

For a direct comparison, three days ago I downloaded the latest Mac OS X Mavericks upgrade to my Mac and it was absolutely flawless, no quirks whatsoever, no sleep problems, every app worked as before, even Parallels Desktop in which I run a Windows VM.

I am by no means an Apple fanboy, in fact, I prefer Windows for my daily work (mostly because I'm used to it probably) as I perceive the PC ecosystem as more versatile and open, but Microsoft should make sure that such basic and essential functions like their apps (which are really the whole point of Windows 8) and energy features (that are by no means special or fancy) JUST WORK. The common counter-argument is that Windows has to deal with all different types of hardware, but come on, I do not buy into this argument anymore, the common chipsets, processors etc. 95% of people use are all pretty standard nowadays, it can't be so complicated to have them cooperate with the OS in a stable, reliable manner...

I have to repeat, once again, that THIS IS NOT A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. Only a few of us are having it. Apple has a much easier time because their hardware specs are fixed to a specific few laptops or desktops. Windows has to handle literally millions of combinations of stuff. Then there are driver updates for those thousands of devices. There is no way to test all permutations.

Yes, Win8.1 GA has some issues on some machines and we are working them out, one by one.

I'm still having problems with this issue. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the apps and then they work great. But then, for no discernable reason, they quit working again. I then have to uninstall and reinstall them again.

Am I missing something? What are you guys experiencing and how have you gone about fixing it?

I am laughing like crazy right now. I said to myself, "have I tried the apps lately?" I went and tried them and BOOM, crash to desktop, once more. They worked for a few days at least but I never use them so who knows when they started again to fail? No, Rockhound, you are not missing something!

I am out of ideas so let's hope someone can post here or on the web a permanent solution. Ai-yi-yi.
