picture importing problems

I am currently helping my father in law with importing pictures onto his laptop, this has been working ok until recently, now when you click to import a message comes up to say there is a problem and you have one option to close the dialogue box. I have a basic understanding of computers and would like to hear of anyone's ideas on how I can fix the problem for him.
