Hi,
I have bought a sony waio laptop last December. I installed winrar 4.2 64bit. But whenever I open any zipped folder and chose to open a specific file, winrar would extract out that file. Then, instead of opening that file, it would open any random file from the folder in which the zipped folder exists (i.e. it would open any file outside the zipped folder).
I have tried re-installing. I have also tried running the program into Vista and windows 7 compatibility mode but none helps.
System configuration:
Model No : Sony Vaio SVS15125CNB
Operating System Windows 8 64 bit
Intel Core i5-3210M Processor 2.50 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.10 GHz
RAM 4 GB DDR3
Graphics Accelerator NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE GPU(SPEED MODE) / Intel HD Graphics 4000(STAMINA MODE)
Dedicated Video Memory 2 GB DDR3 (SPEED MODE)
Display - Type 15.5 (39.37 cms) wide (Full HD: 1920 x 1080) TFT colour display (VAIO Display Plus, LED backlight)
Please help....
Thanks

Hello Carox, welcome to the forums.

It may be due to an older zip format that the archive was created with or some bugs that may exist related to Winrar and zip.
Maybe the program's settings that cover archiving are changed from defaults. If you uninstall, the program's settings are kept and a new reinstall will use them again.

Known normal behavior:
If you open an archive within another archive (zip in zip for instance) then the inner archive will be extracted to temp first and then opened.

Try other programs as well: Winrar 5.00 beta and 7-Zip 9.20 to see how the archive gets opened.

Hello Hopachi,
Firstly, Thanks. My problem is solved with winrar 5 beta. I was facing this problem since 7 months.
However, I would still want to know why was I facing that problem. The program is with both file formats- .rar and .zip and it was not specific to any particular archived file but with all, no matter when it was created and with what version.
It is possible that the program settings were changed but I dunno how to restore the default settings. Also, as a solution to this I had installed Zipeg which was functioning fine, but for some extra features provided by winrar, I had to keep coming back to it.
Thanks a ton!

You must run Winrar with administrator's rights and it will work fine. (You can set it to run always as administrator, as I have done and it works perfectly)

Winrar version 4.11 x64
