Solved Windows Movie Maker Plays Video Too Fast/Shows No Picture!

Hello everyone!

I recently bought a new desktop computer that has Windows 8 and I have been having a bit of a problem with Windows Movie Maker. Whenever I put a video into Windows Movie Maker it will either play the video faster than the audio, or there will be no picture at all (depending on what type of file I put in). I do occasionally do some video editing and I actually enjoy using WMM for some things so I would really appreciate any help that I could get for this problem!

I should also note that originally I had the exact same problem when trying to play videos in Windows Media Player, although after going here (http://windows8codecs.org/) and installing those codecs Windows Media Player now works perfectly. Unfortunately it didn't help Movie Make at all though.

So thank you very much for any help that you can give me, I really appreciate it! :D

The videos you are/were trying to play and/or edit in WMM were probably made with an incompatible codec. One way to fix this issue is to download a video converter, inport the movie that doesn't play correctly, and then convert/export it as a wmv type movie file. Once done, WMM should recognize it and you should also be able to now work with the movie inside WMM. Please understand that if the video is corrupted, my recommendation will not fix it. I use Freemake Video Converter and it works like a charm:

Good luck.

Thank you very much for your suggestion! After converting the video file it worked just fine in Windows Movie Maker. The strange thing though is that the videos work fine without conversion if I put them into Windows Movie Maker on my laptop which has Windows 7. I don't really understand why it should be any different on my new computer, and the fact that it works fine on my laptop with Windows 7 makes me think that it isn't the video file's fault and that it has to have something to do with my new computer.

Glad to hear you got it working. Now to address your second issue. You are trying to compare two different versions of Movie Maker; however, if you go to the Tools> Options> Compatibility Tab (for each version), I am sure you will see some distinct differences in the compatible codec list. With that said, I use WMM 6.0 (the best version ever IMHO) on my 8.0 machine and you can download a modified version for your Win 8.0 machine here. Good luck and I hope I was able to help you today!

I downloaded Movie Maker 6 and it works great! All of my video files play in it correctly, and it really is great to have the time timeline back.

The only problem that I have with it is that I don't see an option to save your video in HD like I can with the newer Movie Maker. Is there a way to do that or am I missing something?

Thanks for your continued support! :D

Hi Andrew7,

Glad you are enjoying WMM 6! Yes, the HD exports are there. See inage below:

You will have the default HD export sizes. I have a few custom profiles added. If you need a custom profile, with a custom export HD size, I can make one for you and show you how to add it to WMM 6. Just let me know. Hope all this information has helped you!

Wow that is incredible then! Thank you so much for all of your help. Even though the Windows 8 Movie Maker still has some issues, my problem is pretty much solved thanks to Movie Maker 6. Not only do the video files work again but I also got the good ol' timeline back!

Thanks again! :D
