secunia and filehippo update checker

Hello
I have depended on these two programs for years but with Wi 8 they are causing issues. One is trying to upload a 32 bit program in my 64 bit pc and the other falters with a manual installation. I write them who advised removing a file and it was downhill from there.

I am currently updating each which involves going to many and checking. This may be the best way.

Doe anyone have a program vulnerability or update checker besides these two that is compatible with Win 8 and 8.1?

Everyone loves File hippo, but with me it tries to install Macrium Reflect as 32 bit. When I go to the program itself, it installs the 64 bit.

Secunia hovers over an update which says requires manual installation but it can not be done manually. The forum told me to remove a file but as I said it caused corruption per SFC.
Thank you

I just downloaded this program to try and recreate your issue.

And I get the same issue, it says An error occurred while attempting to open the specified .

When trying to open the URL

Im still working on it, ill post as soon as I figure it out.. BTW are you using ver 2 or 3? Im using ver 2

Have you tried PATCHMYPC ?

This is what ive been using, it allows you to ignore programs that you do not want to update, it also catagorizes your programs.

That was very nice of you to do. I have contacted both vendors but Secunia seems unwilling to accept fault.
I wish I could corroborate the error with another party.
I now know it is not my pc.
I uninstalled both programs but was using the attest version.
I will look at PATCHMYPC and thank you for the referral.

>>PATCHMYPC works well, thank you.

I found a solution for Secunia not updating microsoft files..

I downloaded Secunia 3, and had the same issues with trying to update 2 microsoft files that I know are outdated.

It cannot connect to the web page. "an error has occured....."

I do not have Internet Explorer installed, so I went to my Chrome settings and saw that Chrome WAS the default browser.

So i opened up Chromium settings and made Chromium my default browser, and voila, shes cured..

I went back to the Chrome settings and again made it the default browser, and again.. she works...

You may have to re-select your browser to default by making something else the default then returning to your preferred browser.

Dont forget to close the browser before using the Secunia updater.

Hope it works for you as well...

Ingenious is the word for your solution. That is amazing. I guess switching browsers is one of the first trouble shooting steps, but it is an after thought for me.
In my case, I should make FF the browser then return to MSIE for it to wok.
I know Secunia is preferred by many pros but honestly with this error I am no longer a fan as they were appraised of this months ago and it appears to be their problem which they are not attending to.
I really like the effective simplicity of PATCHMYPC so will stick with it. Thank you and congratulations on a great job. I am sure others will pick up on it because you and I cannot be the only ones with the problem, and now the solution.
Peter
PS For those like me who do not use Chrome, I assume Chromium is the browser and differs from Chrome. It was hard to differentiate having never used Chrome when you were referring to the "default."

Secunia

There has been a mix up as the reply below from the Secunia staff points out. The issue was with Flash, specifically Adobe Flash Player 11x npapi. The cursor seemd to just spin and said a manual installation is needed. I wrote thenm and they told me to delete a file which then caysed corruption with SFC. Apparently there were 2 issues with Secunia.

If you don't mind I am going to inform them of your discovery but anonymously.

From Secunia:
"Maybe this might be of assistance:I am sure you have gone over the FAQ for Secunia. Issues that have come up in the past were Antivirus settings and whether your Firewall has permission for Secunia. I recently learn that you have to keep the Default LSO cookie for Adobe Shockwave, if using Firefox.Better Privacy. You can go to the search box in Secunia and run through other entries for updating shockwave player and if a solution was found. If you choose to uninstall / reinstall go to Program File and use Secunia application uninstall and then reinstall . Go to windows add/remove and click on Flash Player Settings Manager and tick to "allow sites to save information on this computer. Another trick I've used is to go to the sight that uses flash player with flash player unistall and have that sight update flash player. They are now using a DAT file which I believe to be a Europe design file you can also Google for a free Dat file opener. Mind you that the plugon for Firefox is very weak."

Go right ahead and share, theres no money to be made here, lol :)

Seems like a whole lot of work to fix a glitch that the developer should have experienced by now and fixed by offering a cleanup tool.

Now your biggest issue is deciding which updater you're going to keep....

Yes, it is quite confusing but I feel plenty of time has gone by where we should not have to go through all these hoops to update the programs with either Secunia or file hippo. They bot seem to be having issues. I had been updating within the programs but it is arduous.
PATCHMYPC works well for me, so that Icon resides on my desktop.

Ok so file hippo update checker gave me errors only when trying to install software.

It linked and downloaded fine, but the execution was at fault.

After setting as admin and other tweaks to no avail, I noticed that I could not execute it even from my download folder as if the download was embedded with something that my system refused to allow.

It was not the program that was causing the issue it was my computer, as if the downloaded file had a bad signature or something and was not allowed to create a folder in my user\temp directory.

I manually created the folder \users\David\appdata\local\temp\is-xxxxxx (xxxxx Its no longer there and I cant remember what it was)

But once I created this folder the update checker worked fine, and so did any manual installation from my download folder.

Im running multiple scans on my system now to make sure something didnt sneak in..

Now that the folder is no longer there the program still works fine. I ran CCleaner to get rid of potential problem scripts and other junk files.

When you get your error see what the folder is that it could not create. Dont create it just yet, until I have the results of my system scan to ensure it was not a mistake..

error filehippo.jpg

is-1VOTT.tmp is the folder, I realized I took a snapshot of the error....

I was ok with PATCHMYPC on the laptop but failed to notice I had 2 Skypes on my desktop. I removed the app instead of the other program on the right and PATCHMYPC would not update Skype. I did a system restore and then removed the Skype on the right and PATCHMYPC worked perfectly. I really like it because it is simple yet has integrity.
Glad yours worked out as well.
