CCleaner's great strength is cleaning up remnants of data left behind by programs and web browsers.

I agree with jds63 in that cleaning the registry is asking for trouble. It is also unnecessary as it makes no difference to the performance of Windows.

Just make sure all the boxes in the Registry Cleaning tab are unticked before using CCleaner.
I forgot to do this once and it did cause problems.

I have used the Registry Cleaner in CCleaner for years. I always make the backup .reg file in case anything acts weird after cleaning. Also I make a backup with Registry Backup freeware. The nice feature of this backup is it uses Shadow Services to copy all registry hives even though the system is in use. I have restored with it a few times and never noticed any strange behavior.

What I often find after uninstalls is that file associations are left dangling. CCleaner doesn't get them all but it cleans up many. Wise Registry Cleaner Free I have used a few times. So far so good. My feeling is clean the Registry if there is a reason such as dangling file associations or other old references to software no longer on the system.

Just make sure to back up using several strategies. Registry backup, restore point, system image etc..

I think it would be a service to all the inexperienced Users that come to this forum looking for help, to put a big warning message on the first post that one should not" use the "Registry Cleaner" piece of this software (or any similar software) - and if they do, they should first backup the registry.
I think many that come to this forum will try any "fix-all" software available to fix their computers especially when that software/link is posted (officially) at this site. CCleaner may be great software overall but if it recommended not to use the registry cleaner portion, someone needs to say on the first page (not many are going to read al the way to here).

And it really looks like this software is endorsed by the Administrators, Pro Users, and other experienced members based on the positive responses to the update posting.

PS. I tried CCleaner when I first saw it here, and I ran the registry cleaner too (why wouldn't I, without knowing better). It said it was fixing/cleaning up a few things - and no harm was done as far as I can tell.

Or, if they have the room, when buying a new PC keep the old one to experiment on. If you never do anything you never learn anything. If you have 2 PCs both with internet access you can nearly always bail yourself out of a stupid move, if you are backed up. But I advise experimenting on the expendable machine.

That's what I use my laptop for, testing new(meaning never been tried by me) software and different OS alphas and betas.
Back to Ccleaner, under tools another great feature is Startup. Great to see everything other than the OS that run after boot. I find it much easier than Autoruns, and just as powerful.

I have been using WinPatrol Startup page. But I will take a look at the CCleaner implementation.

CCleaner registry won't run unless you use it i believe, do not think automatic monitoring has feature that does it on it's own like some utilities might. Read back on first post i made did say was safest to use, may help in some cases with corrupt entry in registry, but should know what you are removing before you ever do, when removing entries untick rest then and of course let it make a backup save to Documents in case . Otherwise CCleaner is one of the best cleaners out there.
