I've been looking at Classic Shell and ViStart. Which one do you think is the best out of all the choices?

Since this is a subjective question, my answer is "none". There's a tutorial on the forums showing how to create a toolbar for the Programs menu. I've used, in a slightly modified form, on all of my installs of 8 and it works exactly the way I want it to.
Seems I've gotten so accustomed to the new interface though, I rarely use it any more.

I use startisback. It's not free but cost only a few bucks. Yet , this is a temporary solution. With windows 8.1 , microsoft gives us the ability to directly boot to desktop. I guess I will uninstall startisback after final release of windows 8.1 .

Booting to desktop is very different from having a start menu.

I agree with David Bailey . Classic shell is great and free. Ther are others which millions are using, startisback ( will need adjusting for 8.1 ) and start 8 are popular. There are probably at least 3 dozen others.

There are so many because there is no demand.;)

Another alternative is to use a different os - several really good free ones out there now.
