Apps close themselves after splash screen...

    Hello,

I'd like to know if any of you guys have experienced this issue where when you try to open a metro app you get the splash screen for it and then just a few seconds later you're sent back to the start screen with no explanation whatsoever. It's doing my head in since I can't seem to find a fix - Google returns lots of posts about this issue coming from the win 8 beta, but none of the fixes I've seen seem to work.

It also doesn't happen with all apps. I can open the Music, Messaging or Games apps just fine, but if I try to open the metro Reader app or the Hulu/Netflix apps I downloaded from the store they just won't get pass this screen. Can anyone help me?

    Hello Tizzy,

You might see if going through the troubleshooting steps in the tutorial below may be able to fix and allow your Metro apps to open again.

    Hope this helps,

    None worked

Went as far as completely removing Avast! from my system and it didn't make a difference. The only thing I didn't test now and hadn't tested before is the refresh one, but that shouldn't be needed considering this install is barely 48 hours old...

I finally figured this out. Posting the answer here for archiving purposes.

I tried everything in that list, eventually including refreshing the OS. Initially, refreshing the OS did allow for the offending apps (Hulu Plus, Netflix, Audible...) to work, but soon enough the broke again with no clue on my end as of why other than a windows update breaking them. I tried removing the updates but to no avail, everything was still broken.

Today, I was playing around with the windows when I accidentally put my system in split screen mode, sharing the Xbox Music Metro App (Which has always worked) with the Desktop. Being clumsy, I accidentally switched to the Audible app (Which I had tried to open earlier today to no avail) while trying to regain the fullscreen desktop. Oddly enough, it loaded. However, as soon as I tried to make it fullscreen it crashed again to the start screen.

After this I tried doing the same with Netflix, another offending app. It also loaded and then crashed once I tried to make it fullscreen. This naturally made me think on what exactly could be affecting fullscreen metro apps so that they'd load in split screen mode but break otherwise.

Thankfully the answer to this came to me quickly: Morphological Filtering in Catalyst Control Center. I usually have it on since I find it to be a good replacement for AA when playing without sacrificing my framerate. However, it seems to be interfering with some apps. As soon as I disabled it all apps started opening again perfectly.

Posted this here just so that if anyone comes looking for an answer to this (As I did) they can find yet another possible reason that doesn't include the antivirus (Everyone blames it on Avast!) and doesn't require refreshing the system.
