Microsoft Office 2010?

I just got a new desktop computer that is running Windows 8. My old computer, which was hit by lightning and made inoperable, had Microsoft Office 2010 on it.

I bought the new computer, which has no Microsoft Office on it, other than an offer to buy Office 2013.

This may be a dumb question but can I download Office 2010 since I had it before or will I need to buy it again or buy a newer vesion ? I have no product key for it because it was pre-loaded onto my old computer.

If so, as an alternative, are there any free programs out there that operate like Microsoft Office ? I have a few thumb drives that I cannot get into now because they are requiring Office to open them.

It was probably an OEM license which means it died with your old computer. You would need a full office license for it to be transferable which would mean you would have disks and a box with a license key or you would have an MS store login where you could manage your purchased products.

Try this Apache OpenOffice - The Free and Open Productivity Suite

or this LibreOffice 4 is here!

They are free.

    I like Macs.
Do you have an Office 2010 Installation disk? If so just install it again and use the same Product Key to activate it.

If you don't have the disk but do have the Product Key then download the Office 2010 installer (Dell has a current version with the latest fixes pre-installed), run that, and use your existing Product Key.

If you have a problem with activation (I'd be surprised if you did) call the 800 number and explain your situation. They will tweak your key to allow a new installation.

If you have no product key at all then you really will have to start from scratch.

Do you have a link. I went to Dell's site and did a search, but couldn't find it.

I have Dells and Office 2010 came preloaded but also had the product key on a 4x6 cardboard folder. When ever I want to install Office I just call MS and ask for the 32 or 64 bit version and they give me the link online. I have to enter the product key, one for the laptop and one for the desk. My 64 bit machines will not work with the 32 bit link!!

This is the 64 bit link and the lower is the 32 bit link. You will need the product key as proof of purchase.

The 64 bit link didn't work and the 32 bit link was for Office 365.

I found this....just click the green download button and then enter your product code.

Using your Office 2010 Product Key Card - Office.com

I used this link. When I put in my key. It didn't say if it was 32 or 64 bit or if had all the latest updates. I downloaded it and ordered the backup DVD. The file name was X17-75058.exe.

Office

I can tell you the number that ends in 161.exe is the one that works for my 64 bit pc. The other was for the 32 bit.
To find the what you have 32 or 64 right click computer and click properties. Don't forget you need the product number that came with your Office product. Call Dell with proof purchase if you don't have the number.
Good luck
