Adobe releases free Photoshop Express Windows 8 app

While we are still waiting for Adobe to release a full Windows 8 version of its Photoshop software for the operating system's new interface, the company has decided to launch a free app for Microsoft's latest OS in the meantime that offers its users a number of more basic image editing options.

The free app, Photoshop Express, is now available for download in the Windows Store.

    IMO, it's just another crapware.

if it uses the same excellent code as Photoshop, then this might be handy for quick touch-ups. thanks for the heads-up.

Hmmm... that's interesting. Just a basic quick fix photo app.

Anyway I found this statement even more interesting...

Perhaps I'm missing something because Photoshop CS6 is working great and looks just fine to me under Win 8. In fact it looks the same as in Win 7.

Anyone know what they're talking about? Perhaps I'm missing something?

    Thanks.

As for the app, I might give it a quick try just to see what it's all about.

Photoshop is great. But it'd be even better if it had some more pen-centric and touch-centric features. Like the zoom tool is very inefficient when you need to quickly zoom in and out of an image. If you could do a quick pinch-to-zoom with touch, that would speed up the workflow.

Yup. I downloaded the free Photoshop CS2 with serial from Adobe website and it works fine on both my Win 7 and Win 8 system.

Are you talking about the app, or the full fledged version?

There is an option for the mouse wheel (if you have one) and it works like a champ - Edit, Preferences, General, Zoom with Scroll Wheel. Haven't seen one for Pen, though I don't use any.

the problem with the mouse wheel zooming is that you get weird percentages (I don't use any option, I just hold down Alt when I want to zoom with the mouse wheel). percentages like 95.2, 88.6, 86.5. With Photoshop, the rendering is better when you get to the quarter ones like 150%, 125%, 100%, 75%, 50%. When you go to weird percentages or even 67% or 33%, you get less than ideal rendering. now, if you're just a casual user of Photoshop, it doesn't matter. But go a little higher and it becomes a problem. Now, you can snap the zoom to regular intervals with some more mouse clicks. But the whole process is cumbersome with a mouse. The mouse interface to Photoshop is probably as refined as you could get. It could use some refinement that only new interfaces can provide.

and pen support could be much much better in Photoshop.

I just zoom to a size that looks comfortable to me and go from there. But than again, I also don't follow any cropping rules so. But yeah, I could see these being an issue if they're important to you.

And since I'm neither using pen or touch, I don't see the issue you're having, but I get it.

BTW, I'm not a "casual user", I just don't use pen & touch.
