I finally bought a nice LED LCD HD flatscreen and I want to copy my DVD collection to my PC for streaming purposes.

I want to rip the DVDs losslessly and combine the resulting multiple .vob files into one single file for streaming over my LAN. I'm testing the Slysoft AnyDVD product and their CloneDVD & CloneDVD mobile apps and am looking for any advice and suggestions.

Thanks!

you have some fine products and they'll serve you well. However, DVDs use an older video codec (MPEG2 in a VOB container) that results in very large movies. You could take a 7 GB movie down to under 1 GB if you're willing to convert them to MKV or MP4. Once you ripped the DVD to your hard drive, you can then use something like the free Handbrake to quickly transcode the movie.

for what you have, I'd use AnyDVD to decrypt the DVD and then I would use Handbrake to do the transcoding. I enjoyed CloneDVD back in the day but haven't touched it for a few years now.

Thanks for the info, dirtyvu :D. You're right, the ripped files end up being 5-7 GB in size so I'll look into transcoding them.

if you're looking to preserve all the subtitle tracks and the audio tracks, I would use MKV as your container as it's more flexible. however, MP4 has wider compatibility so if you have many devices like tablets, smartphone, Xbox 360, PS3, etc., it will offer you max compatibility.

I am using XMedia Recode (FREE and works very well) with AnyDVD because CloneDVD does not have the ability to convert from bluray movies. Resulting files are around 2GB from dual layer bluray disc without much setting up to do. Picture quality is superb! I am streaming from my external hard drive connected to a gigabyte router(in my computer room) , via gigabyte powerline adapters to my HTPC in the living room.

Before XMedia recode I was using CloneDVD Mobile, too.
