How do you find the applications?

Hi everybody,
I have problems running Skype from Windows 8. I can't seem to find any options or adjustments for the program. I was hoping to find some type of an adjustment relative to the video transmissions. When I Skype with my son he cannot see my video if I use Windows 8. If I use Windows 7, which I have on another computer there is no problem, he sees me just fine.
Any suggestions?

Skype for the desktop is better than the app for metro, might help if you are using metro app.

At the same time I have not gotten video on the desktop and have yet to figure out why. It was working for awhile then stopped.
