Manufacturer's update applications?

What are people's thoughts about allowing manufacturer's update programs to run? I am talking about HP update, Vaio update, etc. Are they worth the risk that an update may create problems?

Most updates are for the better since they are usually to fix bugs, security risks, compatibility issues, and sometimes add features.

It's best to read the release notes to see what the new version is for to see if it applies to you or not to bother updating to.

Thanks, Shawn. I can review updates if it is my computer.

My concern is if I am setting up a new computer for someone else and I know they will not review the updates, they'll just allow them. I've seen HP updates mess up a computer of mine a few years back, not sure if I am being overly cautious now.

Yeah, it's a bit of a catch 22. You want to help keep your clients' computer updated, but not if it may cause issues.

I suppose make sure that System Protection is turned on to have restore points created to help make it easier to undo an update if it causes issues.

If all it's updating is their bloatware, then it may be safer to just uninstall the bloatware and avoid the updates.

If the client uses it the software, then you could also give them a quick lesson on how to manually review and check for updates.
