Try this folks:

Metro UI Tweaker for Windows 8 Released | The Windows Club

This is a metro tweaking tool that CLAIMS it can disable metro UI, and add apps and files that windows does not let you add natively. I tried it on my machine and this is what I found:

1) It disables metro UI but DO NOT use this tool to disable metro, it may do wierd things to the Task manager.

2) I managed to add the windows defender .exe to the metro Start menu using this app, which wasn't working natively.

3) The app lets you add Shutdown/restart/lock/logoff/switch user buttons to the start menu which saves you some clicks.

4) Folders cant be added with this app.

The only option I selected was "Disable Metro Start Menu"

After a reboot my task manager still looks like this......

Lol, enable metro again with the same tool. Just use this to add apps, files and the shutdown etc. buttons to the start menu. I'm going to edit my first post to avoid more brickbats.

Cool, Bill, thanks! I just used it to add defender and restart to the Metro UI.

Before a ton of negative comments starts to accumulate:
This disabling of Metro Start Screen is a generic tweak used by everyone by renaming your shsxs.dll to shsxs.dll.old, nothing else is changed so it is not specific to this app if you have issues when disabling Metro. I haven't had an issue with Task Manager but I have seen small oddities when disabling Metro.

Though I wrote the app. I am still a firm believer of, if your going to use Windows 8 use Windows 8, if your going to Disable the Start Menu.............. then why not stick with Windows 7.

Hello Lee, don't worry. I think everybody understands DP's pretty buggy and somethings may work, others not. But your app works quite well to add apps. As for the other things, tinkerers must tinker lol. Hopefully in the beta MS'll provide an official way to choose/switch UIs.

Hi Guys

For me this is causing SFC /SCANNOW to report errors it can't fix. I'm unsure as to the exact addition that's causing it but I think it's when I add Internet Explorer (desktop version) to the metro start menu as it overwrites the shortcut for the metro IE and the only other additions I made using this was the shutdown/restart/log off shortcuts. I've re-installed twice now and the same thing has happened on both occasions.
Just a heads up.

Danny

I think it's a great program but after I had issues and did a "Refresh," I didn't use it again and I have not had an issue since.

Kind of expected with a beta on a beta so nothing against the programmer. I think it's cool he does this.

No I was no way blaming the programmer, its a great tool and were all going to have issues. It was more of a heads up before people start posting cbs logs for sfc not been able to fix errors. I'm unsure whether it's just my system or not anyway but can now say for sure its the addition of IE to the metro start menu causing it for me.

Regards Danny

Thanks, Danny. That is, more than likely, beneficial to the developer of MetroTweak.

Another reason I really like this forum! :)

Turning Metro UI off per-user:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RPEnabled set to 0
Then log off and back in.

Then for the rest of the system, login UI, etc:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RPEnabled set to 0
Restart.

No need to change or remove DLL files.

Win 8 runs better on my netbook than Win 7 or XP.
That I like. I do not like the Win 8 Metro UI.
This util allows me to switch off Metro for productivity.
I will continue to try to learn the Metro UI but for my use the ui is a step back in time.
If I was instaliing on a tablet, then the Metro UI would be a plus.
