I found this particular thread while trying to find the software necessary to do the following......I have many DVD's that contain home movies from various camcorders on them. The DVD's are DVD-R mostly, having been made on an independent DVD Burner. I don't know what files they are. I want to be able to edit them, putting some images on Youtube, others , burn to DVD.
I have spent the last two days searching for the software that I need....it appears that I need a DVD converter, to make the files into either WMV or AVI. I downloaded bitripper, but it takes hours to do a 60 minute DVD.
My PC is Windows 8, and came loaded with Cyberlink Media Suite and Windows Movie Maker.
When I load a DVD, Cyberlink pops up with options to play or edit, but nothing to enable me to download the DVD to the Hard Drive.
Any thoughts or questions ? Thanks in advance.

well, the first thing is to know what format your DVD home movies are in. if you can play them in a regular home theater/family room DVD player, then it's authored as a DVD movie in MPEG2 format.

since these are DVD home movies, they don't have copy protection so you have plenty of free options available. All the aforementioned ones will work. you can even use something like DVD Decrypter which can copy the movie to your hard drive (HDD). once the movie is on your HDD, you can use any editor you feel like. Windows Movie Maker 2012 is pretty good for a beginner and it's free. Check that you have the latest Windows Movie Maker (WMM).

I personally use Adobe Premiere Pro but it's pricey. Adobe Premiere Elements is relatively inexpensive.

WMM can now easily create h.264 compliant video so you can publish to Youtube easily.

If you want to publish your edited movie back to DVD movie format, I don't think the latest version of Windows Movie Maker allows DVD authoring anymore. You can use one of the aforementioned programs to take your edited movie and make a DVD movie out of it. Or use a program like DVDStyler to take your movie and make a DVD.
