    Free music ?

I just got my new Windows 8 laptop and found out that I can stream music for free using the pre-installed app called "xbox-music" , I looked it out and found out that I need an Xbox music pass which is for free for 1 month but than its costs 10$ per month .
But when I got in the app again I saw that I need a credit card to get my 30 free trial , so how could I be streaming music right now ?
It asks for my credit card for a 30 free trial but I can still stream music for free now without entering my credit card .
So .. what will happen ? will I be able to stream music for free forever ? I am not using my 30 day free trial but i can still stream , how is this possible ?
Can you guys explain how does the music app work exactly ?

    Thank !

you shouldn't need a credit card to try it out. I don't know if the same conditions apply to you though but for the first 6 months of Windows 8, they were offering free usage of Xbox Music. unlimited streaming, playlists, etc. of your music.

during the free trial usage of Xbox Music, you can search for whatever music you want. add it to your music library and play it any time you like. make playlists. etc. etc. you can play it on any of your Windows 8 or Windows Phone or Xbox devices. the only limitation to the free trial is you can't download the music for offline play. for that, you need to pay for the service.

it's much better than something like Pandora which is more like a radio station than what services like Xbox Music and Spotify offer which is a streaming custom music library. In Pandora, you can choose an artist but you have no actual control over the music. In Xbox Music, you can grab individual song titles and add them to your library and it feels like you own them, even with the free account. If you love the new track out there and want to play it over and over for hours, you can. Of course, it's streaming so you need an Internet connection.

if you're more into music discovery than specific tracks, the services like Xbox Music and Spotify also has the feature like Pandora, Last.FM, etc. where you pick an artist and it finds similar artists. Or pick a music track and find similar music tracks. Pick a genre and it finds artists and tracks that match that genre. And it's pretty cool. I never would've have listened to Regina Spektor before. But I've since added about 10 of her songs to my library.

after the free trial is over, they limit the number of hours of streaming per month. so to answer your question about why it's allowing you to use it even though you didn't start a trial yet is you haven't hit the limit in the number of hours you can stream a month yet. once you hit that limit, you're restricted.

On my Xbox music when I play an Album via streaming I get the a 30 second advert played at the start and the odd 5 second advert in the middle of it, I assume that is how the service is paid for, the more music to stream to your PC = more adverts

if you want to really know more about Xbox Music, check out Paul Therrott's document on it:
    http://winsupersite.com/xbox-music/xbox-music-book-10

he's writing a book and has included an incomplete draft on Xbox Music, downloadable as a PDF. pretty thorough job.

Not sure as to the reason folks pay for on line music. And, if they are already asking for a credit card before your free time is up then it is time to haul your cookies out of that site; that is just wrong. If you have music already configured into MP3, WMA, etc. then all you need is a media player. Why give these companies your money when music is readily available. . .

Because some would consider that stealing of music and copyrighted material and for some that is not cool.

because some people can't afford to buy a lot of music song by song. it's too expensive that way. yes, there's piracy but a lot of people don't want to deal with that.

this (and Spotify by the way) is a great way to have a huge library instantly.

Nothing was said about downloading copyrighted material. Music is available through many channels, trading with friends, ripping store bought CDs that you already have. Come on Park, there are so many ways other then stealing. . .please don't assume. . .

Yeah I know, it would seem that if you can afford a computer and an iPod then you will not be able to afford to buy music. . .
