Best file compressor - for .jpg files

Hi. I used Infozip to create a .zip file with .jpg's. A 60,718,199 byte directory of .jpg images compressed into a 59,898,728 byte .zip file. Not what I had in mind.

I want to copy a bunch of photos... about 2.85Gig onto CDs. Any help, tips would be appreciated.

    Hello,

From my experience, JPEGs are already compressed so they don't get that much smaller when you try to archive them to a zip file. The only image type that I have any success in compressing is a bitmap file.

    Good luck.

I use Advanced JPEG Compressor from WinSoftMagic, Inc. - Advanced JPEG Compressor - Compress, Resize, Edit, Convert JPEG Photos which can reduce up to 1/10 of the original size without noticeable loss of resolution.

    Hi topguncp,

I'd have to see it to believe it so could you please do a test compression of any image to see if you can get anywhere near that 1/10th the size of the original claim? And, could you please post the before and after images as well? Thanks a bunch!

I said up to 1/10. Not every image will give you that ratio but here is a sample, the original image is 190K and compressed to 28K
    which is about 1.5/10

Very, very impressive. It does work well. Thank you for taking the time to respond. Unfortunately, I can't give you another rep yet; however, your response is on my "give another rep" list after I spread some more around.

You are very welcome. BTW, I use this for Website development and also for email which you want images to be small.

Another use is to set desktop background so it does not take long to load at Windows Start up. Here is the Windows 8 BG, which is 1.1/10

I also maintain several websites for friends and family members that have businesses; however, for my purposes, I don't care how large the image may be... as long as it looks as good as it possibly can because the people won't buy the products (example: A reproduction of an original painting) unless they like what they see. And, with today's broadband internet speeds, I have not run across any complaints. Sorry, but those who are still on dial-up service will just have to wait a bit longer to view my images.

    Cheers!

Oh boy! That is one beautiful background!! I'm glad my wife wasn't looking over my shoulder and I'm sorry that I missed the actual image comparison but "they both" looked good!!!

For me, it's important because I develop website for photographers using FLASH which play slide show in full screen every 5 seconds so short loading time is a must.
