Can the old start menu be disabled?

Hi guys,

Most of you know i like the new Windows, plus new Start Menu.

So, can it be done, disabling the old start menu, i really do not need it.

Maybe some program one can buy, anything.

I do not understand MS here, why are we always redirected to the old menu. This is one of the reasons many are bothered with the new menu.

This is a serious question and if i can get a solution for this....would be nice.

What do you mean "old start menu"?

Vista and XP are the only versions of Windows to offer 2 types of start menus. Everything else has only one - there is no "old" and "new". Not unless you installed some 3rd-party software.

A screenshot of the "old start menu" will make it clear what you mean.

Perhaps the OP is refering to the "desktop" not start menu. W8 flips to desktop when executing non-metro programs

well yes,

with start menu i mean, you log on and what you get is the start menu, like in Win 7, Vista, etc.

You get that back when in Win 8 you open something, so redirected to that old start menu, which i do not want.

But if it would be possible to eliminate the Win 7 menu, would be nice, but i do not like to experiment with this.

So maybe one of the expert-programmers know a solution?

It depends on what 3rd party program you installed that added the old Windows 7 style Start Menu back.

Do you what program you installed? If not, then check in "Programs and Features" to see if you may be able to spot it.

Uninstalling the program will remove it.

misinformed you. I do not have a third party program installed.

Just do no longer want to be on the desktop menu in Win8. Why can one not just stay on the new start menu instead of being redirected to the desktop.

So any program that can arrange this, carries my interest.

Unnstalling a Win8 program like the desktop could be dangerous in the end, for the moment.

Ah, I see now Jeff.

You could unpin the Desktop tile as MrShowdown posted above, but there's no way to stop going to the desktop unless you just never use or open a desktop program or feature.

That's going to be real hard to do in Windows 8 since that's at least half of what it is.

yes , right click the "desktop" tile and unpin from "start" ..

im not sure how to bring it back if you regret tho

Neoteo, bringing it back is simple. Just open apps and on the left down, you see desktop. You can pin it again.

still this puzzles me.

Why can MS not consider the REAL START SCREEN as the deskstop screen, this should be possible.

I understand there is much behind the desktop, but it should be possible to convert this to the new start menu.

At least for PC's.

The simple answer is, you can't run every program as an app, not at the moment anyway. Also be careful what you wish for. At this time Metro will only run full screen and only on one monitor. If everything RAN in the Metro environment multi monitor setups would be useless. Running everything from Metro may be fine on a tablet but it would suck big time on a workstation/desktop that uses more than one display.

Your naming conventions are confusing me.
Here are mine, which I'm pretty sure are the official ones:

Start menu: In windows 7 an before it's what pops up when you click on the windows logo in the taskbar

Start screen: shows applications in great big blocks, takes up the whole screen

Desktop: has the taskbar, is where everything lives in Windows 7 and prior, and where non-metro apps live on Windows 8. In Windows 8 the desktop does not have a start menu


Microsoft intends the Start screen to replace the start menu and to bring focus away from the Desktop. Most applications and a good portion of Windows 8 components only work in the desktop.

Assuming that I'm correctly understanding your request: try IObit's Start menu 8. It's designed to add a start menu to the windows 8 desktop, and is able to override the start screen so that all you ever see is the Desktop.

One does not replace the other, not yet anyway. It's my understanding that "Metro" and the "Desktop" are two different environments. Applications coded for Metro will only run in Metro. Standard Desktop programs will only run from the desktop. To get what you want all of the current desktop utilities and programs would have to be recoded to run in the Metro environment. It's not as easy as you might think. To get what you want you would be better off with a Windows RT device that is Metro only. Even then though I think RT devices still have the Desktop screen. Someone with an RT device can confirm that and what exactly you can do from it, if anything. If you are seeing the Desktop you are likely running a Desktop program, something you can't do on an RT device.

I don't think it's possible. Desktop is a "windowing" environment where applications can be in all shapes and sizes, and can have multiple parts open at the same time. Using it is unavoidable for most applications.

In future versions of Windows I expect more of the system to be upgraded so that components no longer use desktop, but you will still need desktop to run non-metro apps.
