    Hi Jeffrys,

If you don't want to do anything constructive/creative - and you are only interested in consuming content - then you might get by with only the Metro stuff.

You could just use a phone for that. No need to buy a pc. You could save yourself some money.

    Wel Siw2,

i disagree here : If you don't want to do anything constructive/creative - and you are only interested in consuming content - then you might get by with only the Metro stuff.

You could just use a phone for that. No need to buy a pc. You could save yourself some money.

    1) unlike others i do not like it to get redirected to the desktop, which in my opinion can be replaced by the Metro.

    2) I cannot be constructive/creative since i am not a programmer, but i know that MS have maybe more then 1000...all of them make a lot of money (good for them).

    3) I find that the option they give right now simply is to make Windows work on a pc AND tablet and make A LOT of money.

    4) removing the desktop in favor of a improved Metro, would mean that the Metro must be reprogrammed......SO ??????

Anyway, unlike you i will never ever use Windows 7 again.

I am not completely disagreeing with you.

MS could have released a metro interface style only os. (They sort of did with RT, but the product offering was way off and it did badly).

And a separate full scale os just for those who need those functions.

I wouldn't mind seeing two distinct versions. One metro only and one your traditional Windows OS minus Metro. Or better still, a checkbox, or install option to pick one or the other. Or maybe something in the "Turn Windows features on or off" section?

I think what Jeffrys is disliking is the fact that once you run a Desktop app (even from the start Screen) you stay on the Desktop, even after closing the app, instead of returning to the Start Screen automatically. Such a "return" would be a convenience for those who like the Start Screen, but I don't think it could be done without greatly complicating the already complicated logic of Windows 8.

Actually, I think it might be doable for fullscreen apps, such as games. They aren't as reliant on the desktop environment, so they could possibly be treated as a Metro app.

Kind of like Google Chrome. It's a desktop app, but it can intergrate into Metro (albeit with some very specific workarounds being used) and be managed as such.

Microsoft would need to allow it, though. And the game might need to be tweaked in order to work (such as to pause when minimized)

    yes,

it would be nice, afterall the desktop uses the full screen, so is the metro.

There are only 2 things that needed change.

    1) Stay on the Metro (for those who want this)

    2) Arrange for programs now opening on the desktop to do exactly the same on the Metro. A question should be asked at install.

    - Do you want the desktop OR do you want to stay on the Metro.

If Metro, possibility to minimize that what the user opens, exactly as on the desktop.

Those wanting the desktop would be happy, those like me wanting the metro would be happy.

I hardly use the startbutton on the desktop, if i do, it is because i am still used to do so. the right mouse click on the start (desktop) works in the Metro as well.

In the Metro, my desktop tile is no longer there.

Maybe all this will happen in Windows 9.

    Sorry Jeff,
Metro is already default when you start; it is limited, true.
If you're not a programmer, then why do you think Metro is improved and/or needs to be reprogrammed?

It's true that you cannot switch between the two interfaces , to set one desired as default, so that doesn't make it improved at all.
Think of Metro as it's early release to be a simple one that can have lacks and those would probably get fixed in the next major release/update or not.

    Hi there
Not sure what exactly you mean -- but do you want to boot straight into the desktop after boot. That seems possible - depending on the speed of your machine as you can write a script that switches to desktop at startup and if your machine is fast enough the switch will occur before Windows has had time to draw the "Start screen".

As for preventing / disabling a switch back the only thing I can think of is to find some macro or key capturing program to see what windows does when you switch back to the start screen and then alter that piece of code to "do nothing".

    Cheers

It would require a fair amount of work, and even then applications would have to be re-written to support it. I really wouldn't hold my breath, as it would probably never be done, or would only be supported by a really small number of games.
