I need to understand running services.

Hi,

I just installed a new program "Team Viewer 8". I disabled it from the startup and rebooted, but when I went to the task manager I see "TeamViewer_Service.exe" is running under SYSTEM.

Can someone explain to me why it is running. I would prefer to stop a service when I close a program.

Is this a waste of memory or maybe it is OK and I should leave it alone...?

Thanks,
BBDS

Though removed from the startup, they are still running under SYSTEM
These 2 are different. In this case the startup item is the Teamviewer.exe and the service is TeamViewer_Service.exe and is a background process and setup in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TeamViewer8\Imagepath

Well, I disagree with what said in this link. IT people use Teamviewer to connect to remote computers for troubleshooting and I personally use it effectively for number of years. Besides, You must have permission from the remote computer with ID & password in order to gain access to their PC. The password is a one time shot so next time a new password must be given.

Back to OP question:
  1. 3rd party software company tend to set their software to run at startup. Do you need it to run at startup ? the answer is NO. You can manually run it when needed to access the remote computer.
  2. Does the service need to run all the time ? again, the answer is NO. You only need it to run when you run Teamviewer in order to establish connection with the remote computer. Just open the services and set it to run Manually instead of Automatic so that when you run teamviewer, the service will start when needed.
  3. Also in teamviewer, go to Extras->Options->General:
    - Uncheck Start Teamviewer with Windows --------> You've already done that
    - Uncheck Close to tray icon ---------> Exit Teamviewer completely instead of minimize to tray

I am confused myself. I use Teamviewer also. But the article was pretty clear.

It is probably a case like with Incredimail. Some people think it's spyware, others think it is great. But it is an internet polluter in any case.

This article is very old and if you look at the registry entry on that page. It was for Teamviewer 3, the current version is 8 and if you set it up the way I've shown above then you only have it run when needed. It is a lot more secured than having the Remote Access feature turned on that comes with Windows. Of course, anything that allows incoming/outgoing internet access is Internet polluter, the same is true for Internet Browsers

My point on the 'pollution' was that Incredimail makes a small 1 line mail of a couple of KBs into a multi MB mail appending their monkey and all the other fancy stuff that nobody really needs for proper communication.

In this case then you should not use Incredimail. What does it have anything to do with Teamviewer ?

Would help if you read my post where I say:

Thank you all for your explanation.

This is how I understood the issue:

When you close a program it will still be running in the background unless you go to the Task Manager and "kill" it.

But if removed from the startup and set to "manual" it will not be running after the reboot until I open it again.

....and the WinPatrol will enforce it......!!!!!!

Please read my post again, you need to remove the entry teamviewer.exe from the start up, and also set teamviewer_service.exe to manual.

Winpatrol will popup an alert windows, just click OK then there's be no more alert.
