both have good reviews and seem to be the ones that stand out from all the others for adding the start button and older menu's.

After readers views on these two. anyone tried both and got a favourite.

Neither. IOBit is known to steal intellectual property from other products and use it in their own, like in the case with Malwarebytes.

Also a lot of problems I see in Windows 8, especially with Windows Update, comes from people having a useless menu replacement installed.

It really is up to the individual. The only thing I can say is try them to see which one you like then go with that choice. Personally I have attempted just about all out there, but ended up back on the stock "Modern Start Screen" just my personal choice.

BTW, just in case no one as already said Welcome to the Eight Forums, then let me say "Welcome to the Eight Forums". . .

"Also a lot of problems I see in Windows 8, especially with Windows Update, comes from people having a useless menu replacement installed."

Which problems do you refer to?
I have been using Classic as a second "legacy" start menu, to back up modern, since the first available release of Windows 8. I have encountered very few windows 8 direct related problems, least of all with classic, for which I have had none?

I agree , start8 looks like it belongs in windows 8 but you can customise it to look like vista or xp

I did a fresh format and install of Windows 8 64 Bit Pro. Sorry but I couldn't live without a start button so I have installed the Start8 start menu which is great. I try sometimes not to use it but find metro frustrating to find programs as I have many. I will use Metro for apps only and desktop of serious computing.
I use Classic Shell without problems and the price is right.

I couldn't have said it any better! However, I am interested in hearing an elaboration (from the Classic Shell recommenders) as to why it is better than Start8? Now, from my experience, Start8 has more options, looks better, and bypasses the Windows 8 Start Screen faster than Classic Shell. Again, to the one-liners, please elaborate on what makes Classic Shell better than Start8?

I haven't tried Start8 for quite a while. There wouldn't be a positive answer too your question.
I don't think either is "better", just a difference in the layout. Classic is (IMO) totally customisable, so , without using the other, I am a little sceptical regarding Start8 having more options?
Speed? When I start from cold, without using any electronic timing mechanism, Classic goes fairly instantly to the desktop, there could be a pause of a fraction of a second, however. transiting between the modern and the legacy desktop, it is, to all intents and purposes, instant.

I have been using Classic Shell since I installed Win 8 with no issues. Never with Windows update.

StartIsBack looks promising; however, I'm a bit concerned over the fact that it looks like support might be limited to the single person that (most likely) wrote the code. Anyway, good suggestion.

Startisback is by far the best. Not a copy that looks like a cheap copy but the real thing. Oh, and support here.

Looks nice in the pictures. I know both that and start8 are small pocket money, but I am happy with the totally free Classic.

Just tried "Startisback.". Not too different from classic. But I didn't try to customise it and it seemed a little buggy. I totally lost the modern screen in there? uninstalled it again.

P.S. Later.

I reinstalled and went for the customisation. Not bad at all.

What problems would these be??

I've been using Start8 since it first came out and have had absolutely NO problems in Windows 8. Best $5 software purchase I ever made!
