Solved Programs not opening

Hi everybody

I've just recently got a new laptop with windows 8 and everything was working fine until today. I tried to install google chrome but the launcher won't open and now this is happening for most program's. I checked the task manager and the program's I try to run are in background processes.

I trust you have restarted the computer by now?

Don't shut down; you have to "Restart".

Maybe the .exe association is defunct. See whether you can fix it with this: Default File Type Associations - Restore - Windows 7 Forums

Don't shut down; you have to "Restart".

I haven't restarted my laptop yet only shut it down,restarting it resolved the problem there was windows updates that needed to be configured.
