Hello everyone,
I recently migrated to Windows 8 Pro 64bit OS, I am having trouble in printing PDF files from the Windows 8 Reader. Reader does detect the printer but whenever I go to print it shows "Sorry printing didn't work" (check the image attached), I am not even getting an error message as to what I am doing wrong, but on the other hand I have installed the latest drivers from HP which according to them is Windows 8 compatible and I have even taken printouts from MS-Word 2013. What is wrong here?? Is it my fault or is this a problem with Reader in Windows 8??? I am using HP DeskJet 1050 (Print, scan, copy). I need a solution to this problem or else I am cannot print without downloading Foxit Reader or Adobe Reader. Thank You.

I use NitroPDF free version.

Download Free | Nitro PDF Reader

It also lets you edit the file. It also installs a printer driver so you can convert just about any file to PDF by "printing" to NitroPDF.

Thank you for your reply but my question is why can't I print directly from the Windows 8 Reader. Why do I have to install a third party software when I already have a pdf reader in-built that is capable of printing.

the first thing to diagnose is whether you can print any PDFs through the Reader app. some PDFs have security that doesn't allow printing.

if you can't print any PDFs in the app, then it's a configuration issue.

I'm able to print through the Reader. you bring up the Charms bar > Devices > your printer. you may have to click on "more..." if you have more devices than is capable of being shown on the screen.

I have already taken the a printout of the pdf in question by using Foxit Reader. I can assure you that the pdf is not protected because a printout is meant to be taken. I can't understand why I can take printouts using Foxit Reader but not the the built in Window 8 Reader. What am I doing wrong ???

Then please tell me what information I have to give. Because in metro style apps in Windows 8 the error messages do not contain much information. What else to I have to give ?

I have heard of this problem before.
I suggest Acrobat Reader.
Unless you want to create PDFs.
There are free PDF programs that allow creation of PDFs.
Google for them.

No.
I meant that if you cannot get the issue fixed that there are other options available.

I use PDF-Xchange Viewer and I noticed that when I tried to print a PDF document, it would not print. In looking at the print dropdown menu, I noticed that the printer listed was a PDF printer, not my Photosmart printer. When I changed it to my Photosmart printer, the document printed. Looking at devices in Control Panel, I noticed that the Xchange Lite PDF printer was the default printer, not my Photosmart printer. I am guessing that he is trying to print to a non-existent PDF printer and not to his actual HP printer. I noticed that in the control panel, there is a Intuit printer, Microsoft document printer, but I actually have only one printer, the HP Photosmart.

Hi there
can someone enlighten me -- What is the built in Windows pdf reader -- I didn't realize there was any "such animal". I've always installed FOXIT automatically without even batting an eyelid - it works, less bloat than adobe pdf doesn't nag every few days about yet another stinking update and seems to do the job perfectly.

I'm always willing to learn -- so please don't take this post as meaning "I don't believe you" --I'm really curious about a Native Windows PDF reader -- I know some Ms Word addins can handle these as well but that's another product and a lot of people don't have office installed.

Cheers

Hi jimbo,
I think it's the Metro Reader.

the main advantage of the built-in Windows Reader is it's really good with touch. things like swiping pages or pinching to zoom in or out. much better than Adobe Acrobat Reader or any of the third-party acrobat readers for touch.

that said, if you don't have a touch device, it's not that great as it doesn't have good annotation tools like the other ones do, especially regular Adobe Acrobat (but also Acrobat Reader).

i never tried one of the newer touch pads with the built-in reader so I don't know how well the windows 8 gestures work for the reader like the pinch to zoom. if it works great with those touch pads, that's another plus for the free built-in reader.
